In real terms, that means a weekend in a property sleeping 16 might cost £4,000 to £5,500 here versus £6,000 to £8,000 in Chipping Campden or Stow. The River Wye winds through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Welsh English border. Rent a large house in the Wye Valley and get ready for a weekend of riverside walks, canoeing and kayaking, scoping out the views at Symonds Yat rock, exploring the ruins of Tintern Abbey, and of course pottering around Hay-on-Wye’s famous second-hand bookshops. To keep things manageable, groups often do one big day trip mid-week while keeping other days for more local activities.
The Forest of Dean is an ancient royal forest with a character all its own. And there’s so much to do there. You’ve got mountain biking at Cannop Cycle Centre, walking trails through oak woodland, Puzzlewood, which was the location for Star Wars and Doctor Who, Clearwell Caves, and the wonderful sculpture trails. It’s a more rustic and adventurous experience than the manicured villages elsewhere in Gloucestershire. Properties here suit groups wanting outdoor activities and adventure rather than village browsing and cream teas.
