Set on our family farm in the village of Lyonshall in Herefordshire, The Old Mill, Hayloft & Byre is part of The Barns at Upper House estate, sleeping up to 28 guests across 12 bedrooms. We also have a configuration for a maximum of 20 guests, or hire the whole space to sleep up to 48 guests. (Please see our other listings for information).

The Old Mill and Hayloft are two adjacent (but not internally connected) beautifully converted barns spanning over 5400 square feet. They have been thoughtfully converted, and are really beautiful spaces to relax and gather together.

This configuration will give you the use of 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, with dining for all 28 guests in our 65ft open-plan kitchen and dining area, with large folding doors our into a south-facing paved and grassed courtyard – perfect for celebrating together. We also have a games room, TV rooms, a log-burner in the winter sitting room, utility space, hot tub, and BBQs.

We offer flexibility in our bedrooms, with options to arrange the beds in superking/twin configurations and a daybed available in certain spaces. All options can be sent over upon enquiry.

We are ideal for families, and have an outdoor play area for children, large garden areas for games, and fun bedrooms for the children including one accessible only by footbridge(!) You can bring all of the family along as we are also dog friendly.

As well as recommending our favourite local spots to visit, we can help organise your stay – whether that’s arranging for caterers to come and cook up a feast, or to arrange some activities for you to enjoy at The Barns. We can arrange for spa treatments, yoga classes, and we can offer on-site services such as additional cleaning services throughout your stay. We can also arrange for our local suppliers to deliver some produce for your arrival, including flowers from our local florist.

We also take corporate bookings and have a designated presentation area and have indoor and outdoor breakout and meeting spaces. We can host small and intimate weddings if you hire the entirety of The Barns on an Exclusive Hire basis. Please see our listing for Exclusive Hire for details.

Location and Things to Do

We are located in Lyonshall in Herefordshire, sitting aside the Welsh border in an area known as The Marches. It is an area of incredible natural beauty and local history with many lovely historic towns to visit and activities to enjoy the outdoors.

The village is sat on a historic ‘Black & White Trail’, a 40 mile circular route going through Herefordshire’s towns and villages that have the characteristic black and white timber buildings infamous in the area. We have the local cathedral city of Hereford, home of the Mappa Mundi, as well as the antiques havens of Leominster and Ludlow nearby. Hay-on-Wye, the renowned book town is around 30 minutes away and is well worth a visit.

It’d be easy to think that being rural there isn’t much to do, but we are surrounded by fun experiences for all. We have historic homes and gardens, great villages and towns, walks in every directions, festivals, and food suppliers – many of whom offer tours and tastings.
