Perched on the dramatic headland of Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of mainland Britain, House of the Northern Gate is an exceptional exclusive-use Highland estate where luxury, history and breathtaking natural beauty come together. Overlooking Dunnet Bay, the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Islands, the beautifully restored baronial house offers complete privacy, spectacular coastal views and an unforgettable setting for gatherings of every kind.
Lovingly restored by the Dunnett family, the house combines its rich Victorian heritage with modern comfort and thoughtful design. Originally built in the late nineteenth century, it has welcomed distinguished guests throughout its history, including Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and today provides a retreat for families, friends and groups seeking an extraordinary experience in the Scottish Highlands.
Available exclusively to one group at a time, House of the Northern Gate accommodates up to eighteen guests across nine individually designed bedrooms. Spacious reception rooms, an impressive dining room, a library, cinema room, games room, gym and beautifully landscaped gardens provide ample space to relax, celebrate and reconnect, while the surrounding estate creates a sense of complete escape.
Whether you are planning a milestone birthday, an intimate wedding, a multi-generational family reunion, a corporate retreat or simply a memorable holiday with friends, the house offers the flexibility to create a truly bespoke experience.
House of the Northern Gate can also arrange a range of bespoke experiences to elevate your stay. Guests may choose to enjoy private chef dining, whisky tastings, surf lessons, spa treatments, Highland dancing demonstrations, pipers, airport transfers and curated itineraries, allowing every celebration or retreat to be tailored to individual interests and occasions.
More than simply a luxury property, House of the Northern Gate is a destination where people come together to celebrate life’s special moments. Whether gathering around the fire after a day on the coast, sharing long dinners overlooking the Atlantic, exchanging vows against one of Scotland’s most dramatic backdrops, or creating lasting memories with loved ones, every stay is defined by exclusivity, warmth and the timeless beauty of the Highlands.
Location and Things to Do
Guests can spend their days exploring the spectacular coastline, walking through the estate’s extensive moorland, discovering secluded white-sand beaches, or following the dramatic cliff paths that surround Dunnet Head. The area is renowned for its wildlife, with opportunities to spot puffins, seals, dolphins and seabirds, while the clear northern skies often reward visitors with unforgettable sunsets and, during the winter months, the magical Northern Lights.
For those seeking adventure, the surrounding area offers surfing at nearby Dunnet Bay, wild swimming, hiking, fishing, golfing, whisky tasting and visits to iconic Highland landmarks including the Castle of Mey, John O’Groats and the Dunnet Head Lighthouse. The estate also provides direct access to a secluded beach, making it easy to enjoy peaceful walks, picnics or simply the tranquillity of Scotland’s far north.
