Elsick House sits in 1,500 acres of farmland eight miles south of Aberdeen, at the end of long drives lined with beech hedges, and can’t be seen from any neighbour. It has been in the same family for most of the time since 1367 – first the Bannermans, then through marriage the Carnegies – and the oldest part of the house goes back to the 13th century. It has been recently refurbished and is taken on an exclusive-use basis, either self-catering or with catering and housekeeping arranged.

Inside, the reception hall, drawing room and dining room all lead off one another; the drawing and dining rooms have double doors between them and together can seat up to 35 for dinner. There’s also a study that works as a bar or whisky room, a breakfast room and the kitchen, and a door out to a south-facing terrace.

The house sleeps 20 in eleven bedrooms, each named after a part of the family history and all looking out over the gardens. Nine are doubles or twins – two superking rooms, a queen, a double and five twins that can be made up as superkings – and there are two singles. Four bedrooms are en suite and the rest have their own bathrooms; the two singles share a bathroom, though the Farnell can be paired with the Southesk bedroom as a suite. Linen, towels and toiletries are provided.

Twelve acres of garden and arboretum surround the house on every side, with a south-facing walled garden running straight off the house, a long arbour walk, ponds and woodland. Breakfast hampers and housekeeping can be arranged on request.

Elsick also hosts weddings and events: intimate dinners for up to 35 in the reception rooms, or celebrations for up to 200 in a marquee in the walled garden, with the house for the wedding party to stay in over the weekend.

House Fact

Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret came here for the young Duke of Fife’s eighth birthday party.

The Bannermans have held Elsick since 1367, apart from a spell after they backed the losing side in the 1745 Jacobite rising.

Edmund's Favourite Feature

“I love the arrival – long drives between beech hedges to a house you can’t see from a single neighbour, and a south-facing walled garden running straight off the house.”
