The ancestral seat of Clan Kerr, Ferniehirst Castle is steeped in centuries of Border history, it is a rare place to stay: a genuine historic castle that remains a much-loved family home available for exclusive-use private hire. Grand yet welcoming, it combines remarkable architecture and character with the comforts of a modern home.

Guests have exclusive use of the entire Castle and adjoining Lothian Wing during their stay, making Ferniehirst an exceptional setting for families, friends and groups looking for somewhere truly memorable.

The Castle and adjoining Lothian Wing together sleep up to 18 guests across nine bedrooms.

The bedrooms comprise one super-king, one king, two doubles and one twin, with four further bedrooms that can be configured as either doubles or twins. There are seven bathrooms and three additional separate WCs.

There are two fully equipped kitchens, one in the main Castle and one in the adjoining Lothian Wing, making the house well suited to self-catered stays for larger groups. For guests who would prefer to leave the cooking to someone else, we are happy to recommend local caterers.

The Great Hall is yours to use throughout your stay, and the open fireplace can be lit with firewood provided. The magnificent Great Hall is at the heart of the Castle and is seen as the social centre of Ferniehirst. Built towards the end of the Border Wars, it features a large ornate fireplace, which guests are welcome to use, with firewood provided. Portraits of King James VI and members of the Kerr family hang on the stone walls, alongside locally handcrafted oak tables, benches and ironwork. A particularly distinctive feature is the continuous scallop-decorated corbel course supporting the ceiling joists.

There are additional reception rooms across the main Castle and adjoining Lothian Wing.

The Castle has Wi-Fi throughout and ample parking for guests. Please note that, as a historic castle, there are stairs and the property is not step-free.

Guests have private use of the Castle gardens and estate during their stay. The surrounding grounds and woodland provide space to explore and enjoy the peaceful setting of the Scottish Borders.

Weddings

Venue capacity: 137

Seated indoors: 40

Venue capacity is the most the house can host in total, including outdoor space and a marquee where one is used. Marquee arrangements vary, so ask the owner.

Ferniehirst Castle is a really special setting and would make for a beautiful celebration for you, indeed our owner got married here in June!

Weddings are something we are exploring but are not properly established as a wedding location yet. You would need a marquee in the garden, and we can explore local options of churches if everything else seems along the right lines for what you need.

Given we would be working together on your wedding as a bit of a first one for us commercially, we would charge accordingly. We would need to work out the exact details of your wedding to be able to give a specific quote, but we would be looking at £8-10,000 (incl VAT) which would include a two night stay in the Castle, and would allow for you to put up your marquee and bring in your suppliers.

You would be able to have up to 18 guests staying in the Castle, and we have another cottage on the estate which can accommodate an additional 6 guests. All additional guests would need to be day guests.

You would need to hire in a marquee, catering kitchen, portaloos.

If this is something you are interested in exploring, do let us know and we can have a chat on the phone, and look to get a site visit booked from there.
