Dabton House is on the historic Queensberry Estate and was fully renovated in 2023. The aim was to preserve its character while creating a place that feels both comfortable and refined. The property has eleven en-suite bedrooms, each furnished for a relaxed and restful stay.
The ground floor begins with a wide entrance hall that sets the tone for the rest of the house. There’s a period drawing room with a baby grand piano, a formal dining room that seats 22, a snooker room for friendly games, and a library for quiet reading.
Two kitchens – one for household use and one set up for catering – make it easy to host anything from small family dinners to larger events. Guests can choose self-catering or hire professional chefs, with produce available from the estate and trusted local suppliers.
The house sits in four acres of gardens, which lead into 27 acres of woodland. Outside spaces include a treatment room, a sauna, and heated kennels for dogs.
Dabton House works equally well for family gatherings, celebrations, or business retreats, offering space to be together and places to enjoy some time alone.
Location and Things to Do
Set in the scenic village of Thornhill on the Queensberry Estate, Dabton House offers a peaceful yet accessible escape, just a short drive from Drumlanrig Castle and within reach of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The surrounding landscape is quintessential Scottish countryside, with rolling hills, deep forests, and winding rivers offering endless opportunities for outdoor exploration. Guests can unwind with a sauna session, croquet on the lawn, or woodland walks, while more adventurous days might include private tours of Drumlanrig Castle, gold panning in Wanlockhead, alpaca trekking in Castle Douglas, or watersports on Loch Ken.
Cycling routes, golf courses, and wildlife-rich estate trails further enhance the experience. Evenings invite a return to comfort—whether for a whisky tasting by the fire, a private concert, or a dinner celebrating the best local produce, Dabton House perfectly balances relaxation and activity.

House Fact
Dabton House was designed in 1820 by the popular architect William Atkinson, following a commission by Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. The house historically served as the home of the Queensberry Estate’s factor until, in the 1980s, it was refurbished by the 10th Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch as a wonderful family home for themselves and their four children, including Walter Dalkeith. In this new chapter, the Earl and Countess of Dalkeith, Walter and Elizabeth, have been instrumental in leading the recent renovations of Dabton House, which they completed in August 2023. The family continues to use the house today and it retains the ambience of a family home.
Edmund's Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“Dabton sits at the heart of the Queensberry Estate in Dumfriesshire – a properly working Scottish country estate, with a Georgian house at its centre that’s very well-proportioned for entertaining. Long table, big rooms, no fuss. The kind of house that’s confident enough not to need to try.”

We have just returned from a wonderful shoot and stay at Dabton House. Alasdair and his team (Evie, Joanna and Chef Gordon) are the perfect hosts and their attention to detail was just tremendous. The house has been thoughtfully renovated with classic and contemporary touches at every turn and our evening meal, was simply delicious. We will definitely return!

I was blown away by the house, the rooms were absolutely gorgeous and oooozed luxury (so much deisgn inspo for my own house – ha!) The facilities were top notch, especially in the kitchen! Everyone was so comfy and couldn’t stop raving about the place and how stunning it was.
We had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in this wonderful setting. Would 100% recommend and stay again!

Just back from an amazing stay at Dabton House with friends, and we couldn’t have loved it more! The house is beautiful and full of character, with cosy, stylish rooms and stunning views from every window. The gardens are perfect for relaxing, and having Drumlanrig Castle right on the doorstep made for some great days out. Highly recommend Dabton House for a memorable getaway with friends!
