Earnshill House sits at the end of a mile-long drive, surrounded by lawns dotted with old oaks and cedar trees. It’s a private, peaceful setting for holidays and gatherings with family or friends.
The house sleeps up to 16 guests in comfort. Facilities include a spa, sauna, gym, and games room, all for exclusive use during your stay.
On the ground floor, the kitchen combines original character with modern equipment: a large induction oven, two dishwashers, and generous work surfaces make it easy to cater for a crowd. The long wooden table is a natural place to start the day with coffee or gather in the evening over a drink.
For special occasions, the dining room seats everyone together, and in-house catering can be arranged. A fully catered option is also available, with all meals prepared on-site (please note that outside caterers aren’t permitted).
There are several reception rooms to suit the moment – a snug with a 65-inch TV and log burner, a light-filled drawing room with countryside views, and a library with oak panelling and shelves of books. The games room offers a billiard table for after-dinner play.
Upstairs, there are eight bedrooms, each with an en-suite. The Major Wingfield and Captain Combe State Suites sit in the east and west wings, with super king beds, sitting rooms, log burners, and far-reaching views. The Captain Combe Suite also has a roll-top bath.
Two bridal suites, Olive Combe and Bridgett Combe, share the top floor and feature large bedrooms, spacious bathrooms, and walk-in showers. Three further rooms – the Pyne, Four-Poster, and Ilminster bedrooms – all have super king beds (convertible to singles), vaulted ceilings, and en-suites. The Ilminster Dressing Room has a super king bed and an en-suite shower.
The estate covers around 700 acres, with 19 acres of woodland, a walled garden, and a courtyard with three coach houses and nine stables, still bearing the horses’ nameplates. The River Isle runs along the northern edge, and the croquet lawn in front of the house was where Walter Wingfield, a cousin of the Coombe family, helped develop the game of lawn tennis in the late 1800s.
Location and Things to Do
Earnshill House enjoys a peaceful yet well-connected location in the Somerset countryside, just 40 minutes from the M5 (Junction 25), 15 minutes from the A303, and 30 minutes from Taunton station. London is approximately a 3-hour drive. The nearby village of Hambridge is home to the Lamb and Lion pub, just a short walk away, while Bowden Farm business park offers local delights like the Brown and Forrest smokery and the Therapy Room for spa treatments.
The market town of Langport, 15 minutes away, features riverside walks, charming cafés, and a lively Thursday market. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Quantock Hills – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – are about an hour away, offering dramatic landscapes and wildlife. Earnshill is also preparing to host weddings, with multiple ceremony settings and in-house catering to ensure an unforgettable celebration.

House Fact
The ancient manor of Earnshill dates back to the Domesday Book. During the reign of William The Conqueror In the 11th century, the manor was divided, before being bestowed by William upon the monks of Muchelney Abbey around 1086.
The manor was passed between local families in the centuries following before being acquired in the 18th century by Richard Combe MP, son of a prominent Bristol merchant. Richard expanded the existing country villa by building the substantial east and west wings of the property.
The Combe family has continued to own and maintain Earnshill House through the generations. Notable family members include Major Walter Wingfield, the inventor of lawn tennis, and Olive Combe, a champion croquet player. The estate’s croquet lawn and the family portraits dotted throughout the house serve as reminders of their rich history and contributions.

A group of 16 of us recently stayed in Earnshill House as a university friends reunion. We have been doing these weekends on and off for almost 50 years and we all agreed this was the best place we have ever stayed. The house is stunning and is set in the most beautiful parkland with views for miles across Somerset. Inside it was fabulous and beautifully decorated and furnished. It feels like a stately home you would visit with rooms and furniture roped off but while everything is on a very grand scale at the same time it’s comfortable and homely! The owner Nick is a wonderful host – on hand almost immediately if you needed him but otherwise he left us to it. The history tour he does is well worth doing as Nick’s family have owned and lived there for over 300 years. The weekend flashed by with walks, visits to the local pub, croquet on the historic front lawn, relaxing in the sauna and hot tub and a lovely catered informal meal one night. We were sad to leave but brought away some great memories. We can highly recommend Earnshill House to anyone wanting a special place to stay with family or friends. Thank you Nick! We will be back!

Birthday celebration, February 2026
We stayed for the weekend to celebrate my son’s 30th birthday and it was the perfect location. The house itself is stunning with lots of history but meets all modern needs too. The atmosphere and room decoration is outstanding – creating a peaceful, welcoming, beautiful space. I was so impressed with the facilities- from the games room to the hot tub and the beautiful dining room that Nick had ensured was set for our birthday meal – it looked so beautiful.
The owner Nick really went the extra mile, nothing was too much trouble and he did everything to help make our celebrations a success.

We stayed at Earnshill House for NYE and had the best possible visit. The house is simply stunning and such an incredible place to stay. We have rented other large houses before for group stays, and often only one or a few of the bedrooms will be truly special. Earnshill was different — it was so clear that Nick and the team put tons of thought and effort to make every single bedroom feel like an extraordinary, historic place. Moreover, the shared spaces were super well acquainted (the American pool table was a personal favorite), and the dining room was set up for us to have two beautiful formal meals. Finally, Nick the owner was so kind to take our group on a detailed Earnshill tour, putting the house and grounds into historical context and even letting us hold special family treasures to make the whole thing come alive.
We are so grateful for our NYE experience at Earnshill and would definitely recommend the property to anyone looking for options for a group stay or an event.

We (a family gathering of 16 people and 4 generations) all absolutely loved our week over Christmas at the historic Earnshill House. It is simply spectacular. There are several large and very beautiful reception rooms as well as a big well-equipped kitchen (with a generous back kitchen) and a fabulous dining room. The carved wooden stairways and the massive landing areas are just stunning. The bedrooms are huge and sumptuous with wonderful period furniture, blissfully comfortable super-king beds and very high quality bed linen and pillows. The ensuite bathrooms are all fantastic; the two on the top floor have enormous showers and luxurious baths with a view over the grounds. Nick, the owner, was incredibly friendly and welcoming and keen to make sure we had everything we needed. His guided tour of the house was fascinating. We enjoyed all the toys, including the pool table (in a lovely room off the large snug), the well-equipped gym, the brand new sauna and the hot tub with built in speakers. Outside the grounds are extensive and magnificent. Overall it’s difficult to describe just how good this place is. Amazing!

I celebrated a big birthday at Earnshill this weekend with 14 friends and it was one of life’s truly memorable experiences. Nick has created the perfect elegant, sophisticated heritage property, blending the history of his family and the period detail of their home with some seriously beautiful styling.
Earnshill has some remarkable features, not least the ability to give each couple staying the space and grace to holiday with each other but not in each other’s pockets. The rooms are stunning (we stayed in the Captain Coombe which has it’s own living room also).
We had catered dinner on Friday night and then a chef’s dining experience from Jonny, Katie and Claire at Milkshed Catering on Saturday night, which was delicious and perfectly served in the glorious dining room.
We enjoyed a clay shoot from the cheerful and patient Brian and Lauren, which was great, and a wonderful historical tour from Nick, which we were fascinated by. He’s a brilliant storyteller and endlessly knowledgeable.
Spending our days in the sauna, walking the area, hot tubbing, playing games and drinking lovely wine, what more could a group of old friends want?
An absolutely faultless experience from start to finish. We’ve already talked about returning and it would be a pleasure.
Side note – if you are considering Earnshill for your wedding – do it. As someone who works in the wedding industry, I can’t think of a more delicious place to spend your wedding weekend. It’s flawless.
Thank you especially to Nick and Katie, for everything you did for us this weekend. It was the holiday of dreams!

We had a truly memorable weekend staying at beautiful Earnshill House. It was a large family gathering of multiple generations and we all absolutely loved the house .. the stunning house & grounds, incredible interiors, the remarkable history and so much space! Nick was so generous with his time & knowledge giving us a tour and an insight into his fascinating family heritage. It was an opportunity for us as a family to spend time together in such lovely surroundings and we all made the most of it … enjoying the walled garden, the hot tub & sauna, the pool table, the stunning reception rooms & dining room & even had an air rifle shooting competition! We felt very much at home & with the help of Milkshed Catering, enjoyed some amazing meals too. Thank you for having us & we very much look forward to coming back soon!

A chance of a lifetime. This property is beautiful. It’s perfect from the moment you arrive with the surrounding fields and nature, to seeing the amazing house. Inside the property, it is the correct balance of old and modern. Beautiful decor throughout. Showers that are incredible. The softest and comfiest beds ever. Huge dining areas with lots of spaces to enjoy time with family or friends. Nick – the host was brilliant.
Highly recommend the house and will definitely be back.

We had our wedding at Earnshill House and it was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The house and grounds are stunning — full of character, charm, and history — and created the perfect backdrop for our celebration.
What truly made the experience stand out was how accommodating, helpful, and welcoming the team were. Nothing ever felt like too much trouble. They worked closely with us to make sure everything ran smoothly, and their attention to detail helped take a lot of the stress out of the day. You can really tell they care about making each event personal and special.
Our guests were blown away by the beautiful setting, the atmosphere, and the seamless experience. We honestly couldn’t have asked for a better venue or a kinder team to work with.
If you’re looking for a unique and memorable place to host a wedding, Earnshill House is truly exceptional. We’re so grateful we chose it — it will always have a special place in our hearts

We stayed here in June to celebrate my 30th birthday, and it honestly exceeded all expectations. The weekend was packed with amazing moments—from hosting a murder mystery evening on Friday to a private dining experience on Saturday. The Earnshill events team did a great job organising the catering. To top it off, there was a surprise hot air balloon ride that made the whole experience unforgettable.
The house itself had everything we could possibly need. It’s in a beautiful location with stunning grounds, and there was plenty of parking for everyone. We also made the most of the garden with lots of croquet using their set. The food and service throughout were outstanding. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate!

What an amazing place to stay. Full of history and character. The surroundings are just as special as the house, walking in the woods whilst spotting various wildlife was a particular highlight. Pool table kept us entertained in the evenings after dinner. The kitchen was very well equipped. Nick was very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed learning about the history of the property. We look forward to coming back again.

Earnshill House is an exceptional property, it has a great balance of history and modernisation. We enjoyed everything about the house from the pool table and sauna, to the grand dining and drawing rooms. The owner was kind enough to give us a history tour, which everyone in our group enjoyed and it really gave a sense of how special this house is. We saw so much wildlife while exploring the grounds; owls, deer, foxes, rabbits and a woodpecker!
As soon as you pull into the long winding driveway, you know you are entering something special. It’s not a weekend we will forget anytime soon and hopefully can repeat in the not too distant future!

This is a special place.
We came to Earnshill House on 11th January for a birthday party and were completely blown away by this historic house.
You know you are in for a treat from the moment you enter the gates. The setting is beautiful and unspoilt. We had a wonderful party with friends. The food was delicious, and the setting magnificent.
The house is an authentic country pile and lacks for nothing with beautiful rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, a well-equipped gym, a hot tub, a sauna, and stunning grounds. We were also delighted to meet the owners, who were warm, welcoming and immensely knowledgeable about the house’s history. A tour of the house is a must!
We left feeling thoroughly spoilt and hoping to return for a much longer visit.

Absolutely magical !! We went on beautiful long walks through the fields, explored the walled garden and the woods. The house was magnificent, restored wonderfully with a few modern touches (sauna, hot tub, and a fully equipped kitchen!). A highlight of my trip to the UK!

We’ve just had an amazing Christmas holiday at this beautiful home. It has been recently restored to a very high standard: vast bedrooms and bathrooms, elegant sitting rooms and a well equipped kitchen. The owner Nick is friendly and helpful and told us all about the interesting history of the house. There are views all round with complete privacy and peace.
