Smedmore House is an elegant Georgian mansion on the Dorset coast, set on a private estate bordering the sea. It is perfect for large family celebrations, or special times with friends.

There are eight bedrooms in the main house, two of which are en-suite, whilst the remaining six share a variety of bath and shower rooms.

In addition, the Garden Wing may be available upon request for a further six people in three bedrooms (subject to charge).

Downstairs, you’ll find a drawing room, dining room and games room (rather charmingly known as the ‘Cedar Room’), and a large, modern kitchen.

Outside is just as lovely as inside, with romantic walled gardens, generous flower-filled beds and beautiful sea views. Guinea-fowl are often found perusing the front lawn.

Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature

“An outstanding aspect to Smedmore has to be its atmosphere of timelessness.

Dutch furniture can be found throughout the house - inherited from the last English descendant of a general of William III, Godart van Ginkel, Earl of Athlone. The house was originally owned by the Clavell family, and the current family are direct descendants - they're Mansel by marriage.

Reviews

We had a pre Christmas family gathering for 19 of us, varying in age from 1 to 82 years. It was a wonderful place for us all to meet up. The house is beautiful , with very spacious and comfortable accommodation . It was very clean and had lovely Christmas decorations, plus log fires. ...

Weddings on the Purbeck don't get much better than this. Great vista's of the Jurassic Coast, a manor house to use as your own for the weekend and space for outdoor speeches. Make sure you make time for the evening sun, it's magical

We don’t anonymise most of our properties so you can find them on the internet. But if you enquire, it’s better for you to do it via the contact form on their Landed Houses listing. If things go wrong (and it does happen), then we can check the details and help you.

Over 20,000 people a year send enquiries via Landed Houses and all of them get free support.

There’s no catch or cost, and you will still communicate directly with the house owner or their manager.
