Northmoor House is a Victorian country villa, on the edge of Exmoor National Park. The house has been sensitively restored with the period in mind, and retains original features such as the servant’s bells and the butler’s bath, still stowed in its cupboard.
Northmoor is suitable for relaxed family parties, special celebrations, reunions of friends or family holidays. The house sleeps up to twenty-eight guests in fourteen bedrooms, with seven bathrooms.
Cots are available for children, and dogs are welcome. There is a bedroom on the ground floor, for those wishing to avoid stairs (a bathroom with disabled facilities is right next door). Should you need extra space for extra guests, there is also a self-contained lodge at the end of the drive, which sleeps a family of five. The ground floor has plenty of space for everyone and includes a morning room, drawing room and two sitting rooms.
There is also a very fine dining room, and a billiard room. There are two kitchens and all the back-of-house rooms from the Northmoor’s past, like the dairy, scullery and pantry – and the servants’ hall. A table tennis table lives in the room on the far north-east of the house, next to the woodshed (there are plenty of fireplaces at Northmoor!). The lawns around the house drift seamlessly into the ancient Sessile Oak woodlands, and the River Barle is barely five minutes walk away – perfect for picnics or a summer dip-of-toes.
Location and Things to Do
Northmoor House is nestled at the edge of Exmoor National Park, surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife. The estate is home to wild Red Deer, often spotted in the gardens and parkland. The River Barle, located just five minutes’ walk from the house, offers a peaceful spot for picnics or a refreshing summer dip.
The surrounding ancient Sessile Oak woodlands provide a tranquil and scenic backdrop for outdoor activities and exploration.
Weddings
Northmoor House, with its blend of Victorian elegance and natural beauty, is an ideal setting for intimate weddings. The expansive grounds, ancient woodlands, and historic house provide a unique and charming venue for a memorable wedding celebration.

Edmund's Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“There’s a very special atmosphere at Northmoor, a sense of timelessness. I can’t think of anything nicer than cradling a late-night brandy on Northmoor’s terrace, watching the stars and chatting with friends.”

If you are considering a family and /or group stay, do please consider Northmoor House. We have just celebrated my husbsnds’s 80th birthday there and it completely exceeded all our expectations. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable and absolutely everything had been thought of to make our stay perfect. There were toys for the younger children, a games room for the teenagers, and several comfortable sitting rooms for the older guests. There was even wood for the fire pit. Northmoor is so well equipped with two dish washers, washing machines and dryers and more than enough crockery, glasses and silverware to cater for large groups. All this with wonderful gardens and woodland which we enjoyed exploring, followed by evenings round a fire. We all had a memorable stay and would recommend Northmoor most enthusiastically.

We booked this lovely house for my mother’s 90th Birthday Celebrations. The house, grounds and its location are stunning. We found the guide attached to the booking documents very useful, using its recommendations to select Lucie Moore for the catering and Shalden Shooting School for a morning’s entertainment. There is plenty to do locally and walks are available in close proximity to the house. All who joined us that weekend were very complimentary about the house and we really enjoyed the ambiance.

Superb place for a large gathering of many different families, kitchen includes lovely matching crockery and glasses of all sorts for well over the 19 people we had. There is a 5 ring stove and huge Aga so 4 ovens available for that feast you had in mind, as well as plenty of space for loads of helpers & touches like 3-4 spare high chairs and cots and push along toys for toddlers kept even the small ones occupied. Great local walks to Dulverton and along the river, and a disabled accessible wetroom and downstairs bedroom make this an idea venue for a multi generational family get together. The random Victorian bookcases of Punch and lovely flower paintings in each room give this the air of a Victorian mansion that everyone who grew up in a smaller Victorian house will really appreciate.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Northmoor House. We were a large family group and this magnificent house with its extensive grounds more than kept us entertained for a week. The house is steeped in history and with its unspoilt original features and historical artefacts throughout, has all the charm of a National Trust property – but with the freedom to explore! It is well located, within walking distance to the nearby town of Dulverton (we enjoyed the scenic walk by the river) and for days out to the north and south (we enjoyed days out at Dunster Castle and Exeter). Although it is a large house with numerous bedrooms, bathrooms, living spaces, kitchens and storage areas, we were pleasantly surprised by its warmth and cosiness in the middle of winter (much more so than it looks in the photos!). We hired a hot tub with a company recommended by the owner, Tammy, which was easy to arrange and this was a great addition to our stay. Tammy was very helpful and accommodating throughout the process. Overall, we would thoroughly recommend staying at Northmoor House for a fabulous break away from the world whilst enjoying a unique opportunity to experience stepping back in time (with some necessary modcons!) and spending some time in the beautiful countryside.
Big Weekend
We had the most wonderful stay here! It’s a warm, clean and spacious house with a fantastic open fire. Kitchens are very well equipped and there was plenty of hot water. 29 of us stayed here and it didn’t feel crowded, the kids enjoyed the games rooms. The grounds are beautiful, it’s in a very quiet area with lots of places to visit nearby. Village shops and pubs are just a short drive away. The Bridge Inn was very welcoming! Tammy is a lovely host! We hope to come back next year!

We as a group of 9 families had the most amazing time at Northmoor House. Tammy was an incredible host, answering all our questions and accommodated all our needs. The house was big, beautiful and spacious and catered to all our needs. The grounds are beautiful and we had good walks around the place. Lots of good memories and photos later, we will be visiting again

Great place for a family holiday; accommodates 20-25 people with loads of rooms. Plenty of space to chill and relax and in peaceful surroundings on the ‘gateway’ to Exmoor.

Thank you Tammy and team, we got back yesterday from the most wonderful weekend of family celebrations. We have an annual family gathering and Northmoor was perfect for our 17 adults and 3 children….we had rooms to spare! Especially Loved the large kitchen with aga, beautiful gardens, plus the snooker and games rooms. The house is huge and in places a little tiered, but that is part of the charm. Perfect for a weekend getaway to spend time with a big group of friends or family x

Stayed here late August on a multiple family get together. We loved the place – loads of atmosphere, acres of space, magical, secluded setting in the woods.

We have stayed twice now. Once back in 2010 for my 40th and once recently for my mum's 80th. Both times were made extra special by this wonderful building and location. Many Thanks Tammy.

Absolutely fantastic House , highly recommend a visit ! In all 35 of us stayed in the house for a week and no one had any complaints . House was fantastic and surrounded by natural beauty . Dulverton is a lovely little postcard village with everything you could need and it’s only a short walk away .

Just arrived back home from 5 days at Northmoor House, what an amazing house with beautiful grounds! The kids loved playing hide and seek in the massive house, and we enjoyed a Murder Mystery night! The town is a short drive or nice walk away and the locals are lovely people who are happy to help, would 100% recommend visiting if you get the chance!
Kerry-Ann Dunlop
Beautiful house huge, quite eerie as it is a Victorian building but very beautiful
Alexandra Eaton
Exciting and very atmospheric house. Stunningly beautiful with lots of secret staircases and connecting doors. 14 of us stayed for a 50th birthday celebration and had a great time. Dressing up on Saturday and chilled out games on Sunday. Great place.

Just come back from a wonderful weekend at Northmoor. I would recommend it for families, friends and cyclists. Great hills, beautiful views and lovely villages to explore. The house is stunning and a wonderful place to escape to. Really well looked after, beautiful rooms and great spaces to socialise with the family – thank you Northmoor x

Amazing location, especially at spring time when the blossoms are out. Accommodation is very original to olden days, so lots of things are just run down naturally. Highly recommend for an occasion when you need to fit 28 people under one roof. It’s a lot of fun! Dulverton village is very cute, pub and Thai restaurant highly recommended as well.

Love it both time we’ve visited and we will come back again

Great house in a great location, didn't see any Red Deer unfotunately but a good walk to Tarr Steps on Saturday followed by a gentle stroll into Dulverton on Sunday. The house is just perfect for that weekend getaway.
