The Tudor Barn is a II* listed 16th-century barn, creating an atmospheric, quirky and unique property that combines comfort and historic integrity. The property is situated on a 500-acre working farm in rural Suffolk, farmed by your hosts for seven generations. It is both an unusual and beautiful location – off the beaten track down a quiet farm drive but within three miles of historic Lavenham and 1.5 hours from London by train or car. It is peacefully surrounded by ancient wildflower meadows, walled garden and hedged countryside, with beautiful Grade II* listed hall farmhouse, aisled barns and cartlodges.

The Tudor Barn provides space to be together and space to be apart. It is huge – a great space for gathering, celebrating, feasting, dancing, and playing games and, in good weather, playing tennis or croquet in the herb garden or borrowing the barn’s own fleet of 20+ bikes to explore the area. It’s perfect for special occasions like hen parties and family reunions.

The main barn with adjoining cartlodge sleeps up to 25 guests, and up to 50 guests can feast in Tudor costumes (provided) at oak banquet tables, with a comfortable sitting area for 25 to relax around the woodburner in winter. The huge open plan barn area sleeps 16 in comfortable Tudor-style Suffolk-oak beds (four-posters, singles), and another nine guests who want more privacy can sleep in the four adjoining private bedrooms. The barn has bathrooms and a hop, skip and a jump away are more modern showers and loos. The large well-equipped kitchen has 21st century facilities – and your hosts will unpack your supermarket delivery, give you tips on the best local food and drink and if you’d rather not cook yourselves, they’ll put you in touch with a local chef.

At Milden friends, walkers, cyclists, civilised hens or re-enactors can get together in spacious, beautiful, ancient and unspoiled surroundings, amidst a sensitively farmed landscape. Here, you can walk, run, hug trees, pond dip, read, lie about, meet the two pigs and free range chickens, play tennis or croquet, bike, draw, paint, sing, eat and be merry in 21st century style – and if you’d like to, dip one foot into the 16th century. And know that your hosts are extremely environmentally conscious – using solar energy, providing an electric car-charging point, a fleet of bikes to borrow, and green incentives for guests.

Location and Things to Do

Located off the beaten track yet easily accessible from London and the surrounding areas, the farm offers scenic walks, historic wool towns such as Lavenham and Long Melford, and nearby natural beauty including Constable Country and Suffolk’s coastline. You can borrow our 25 adult road bikes and prepared circular routes or walk the lovely local footpaths.

House Fact

We have researched every owner of our farm since Domesday and discovered that various ancestors have owned the property on and off since the 1400s – and we have archaeological finds that date back to the Stone Age.

Edmund's Choice of Extraordinary Feature

“The barn itself is simply breath-taking, even if you don’t go full-on Tudor for your celebration theme. I think guests will also appreciate the relaxed, renewable energy vibe that the Hawkins family has established. 25 bikes!”

Robert

What a truly magnificent venue for a large party who are celebrating a special occasion or reconnecting with friends/family. We stayed at the barn to celebrate my brothers St-en do a couple of months before his wedding day. There were 23 of us and we all had the best time. The youngest of our group was 14 and the oldest was 85. It’s perfect and caters for all ages. The moment we walked into the barn, it took our breath away!! It’s absolutely stunning. We were greeted by Christopher, who was very helpful and accommodating. A perfect host along with Juliet who made sure everything was ready for our stay. There really is so much to do at the barn. We had a murder mystery dinner on our first evening and all sat comfortably around the fire. On the Saturday we used the bikes and cycled to three of the local villages. We hired a catering company, who we highly recommended, to cook our meal on the Saturday evening before being entertained by a drag queen. Before we departed on the Sunday we played tennis and dressed up in the beautiful Tudor costumes. We can’t wait to find an excuse to come back and highly recommend the Tudor barn to all large groups.
