Darley House is an award-winning Georgian country house near Chatsworth in the Derbyshire Dales, sleeping 14 guests in six bedrooms and set within an acre of historic Victorian gardens designed by Sir Joseph Paxton.

Winner of Gold for Self-Catering Accommodation of the Year at the Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards 2026, the house combines period character with the space and comfort needed for family gatherings, celebrations and weekends with friends.

At the heart of the house is the wonderfully spacious kitchen and dining area, with vaulted ceilings, granite worktops and Miele appliances, including two ovens and two dishwashers. A large dining table seats 14 overlooking the gardens, while a mezzanine snug with a television provides another place to relax. The kitchen was also chosen as a filming location for The Hairy Bikers Go West.

Four generous reception spaces give larger groups plenty of room to be together – or spread out. The Drawing Room is an elegant setting for drinks and conversation, while the cosy wood-panelled TV room has a log burner. The large games room has table tennis and other games and can also be transformed into a private dining or activity space.

All six bedrooms are on the first floor. There are three king-size bedrooms, each with en-suite facilities; two twin bedrooms, one of which can be converted to a super king; and a double bunk room sleeping four. Two further shower rooms, including a striking Moroccan-style wet room on the ground floor, provide plenty of bathroom space for a full house.

The gardens are one of Darley House’s most distinctive features. Sir Joseph Paxton – Head Gardener at nearby Chatsworth and later designer of the Crystal Palace – and his wife Sarah bought Darley House in 1845, and Paxton laid out the gardens here. His design can still be seen in the sweeping stone steps and balustrades, terraces, lawns and winding paths through mature specimen trees, including historic ginkgo bilobas and a giant redwood.

Guests can play croquet on the lawn, explore the woodland paths, find a quiet corner beneath the trees or gather for drinks and outdoor dining on the terraces. Traces of a small ridge-and-furrow conservatory built by Paxton also remain visible on the house – an intriguing link with the glasshouse ideas he later developed so famously at the Crystal Palace.

With Chatsworth and Haddon Hall both around 15 minutes away and the Peak District on the doorstep, Darley House offers a memorable base for bringing family and friends together in one of Derbyshire’s most beautiful areas.

Lovely house and grounds. Had a great weekend!

You cannot help but be impressed when you arrive. It is everything as described in the ‘Darley House app’. We were a party of 8 adults and 6 children(ages from 2yrs to 14yrs) and with the addition of a hot tub and pergola the weekend was perfect. We used the BBQ which was a bit tricky as we had no experience of the Little Green Egg but got there in the end. The kitchen is what we all want, space, facilities and functional. Bedrooms, beds and en-suites are equally impressive. There is so much we could say but be rest assured you will not be disappointed. The venue helped us make memories and celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary – big big thanks to Lucy-you are a star.

It was my Dad’s 80th birthday celebration. We spent the weekend at the house and didn’t actually go out apart from Monsal Trail Parkrun Saturday morning. The house and gardens are really special and the 4 kids loved it. We played croquet, football, badminton and lots of hide and seek inside and outside. The games room was a big success. All the bedrooms and bathrooms were to a very high standard and the kitchen fully equipped and able to cater easily for large numbers with 2 ovens and 2 dishwashers. Additional fridge space for alcohol. The kids enjoyed ‘movie night’ while we had a beautiful meal cooked and served for us. The team of 2 who came were really friendly but also very unobtrusive and the food was outstanding. We have have a very memorable weekend xxx

Lovely house, great feel to to it, beautifully done up and well appointed. Lots of space so didn’t feel on top of each other at all. All double bedrooms all good size (we didn’t need the bunks but good for those with children) Good garden space (though not quite the weather to use it whilst we were there in March). Lucy very helpful and advice re booking. Well placed for walking and cycling and close to shops. Wonderful area to explore – would recommend

House was glorious! Kitchen equipment v good. The crockery and glassware were lovely and plentiful but could have had a bigger oven or a second oven. There were plenty of saucepans and frying pans and utensils for 8 people, could do with a huge pan and oven safe dish or 2. Rooms are stunning with incredible views.

Stunning house. We stayed for a week in Darley House, three families – 6 adults and 6 children who all equally fell in love with the house on arrival. The house has been beautifully restored and the gardens are equally as gorgeous. We were lucky to have some fabulous weather while we were in Derbyshire and spent much of our time at the house in the garden and kitchen which opens out on to the lawn. The gardener works on a Thursday and Friday and is happy to chat or get about her work. There were certainly no random passers by walking into the gardens on our stay. The owners have provided almost everything you could need from an array of all things cooking and eating, to a very well stocked library and dvd collection, to table tennis, a pool table, crouquet and lawn tennis set. There was also a welcome breakfast hamper left on the kitchen island a very nice touch. Couldn’t recommend Darley House enough.
