House Fact

The land around Cholwell Hall has been owned by the church for many centuries. In 1884 the local vicar took out a loan from the Bounty of Queen Anne and used the money to amalgamate the ancient dwelling of that time with certain adjacent barns putting it all under one roof and with bath stone facing to create the fine country residence of today. The outwardly Victorian appearance of Cholwell Hall therefore masks much older origins, glimpses of which are still in evidence with medieval beams and thick stone walls. The property came into private hands in the 1970s and is available for special gatherings of family and friends.

Edmund's Choice of Extraordinary Feature

“Cholwell Hall is a very practical house, ideal for a gang of good friends to stay for a weekend. It’s within easy taxi distance from Bath or Bristol for a good Saturday night on the town, and the neighbours are mostly sheep. It’s very well presented, comfortable spacious and clean. Each room is individually decorated with old world charm and flowery wallpaper predominant.”

We spent many months earlier in the year trying to find suitable accommodation for 29 members of my family to go away in the October half term. We were celebrating our brothers 50th birthdays.

The family range was oldest 93 years old (our dad) and youngest member was my nephew aged 5. We needed space for dining and room for entertainment, together with in-house activities should the weather stop us from being outside.

Cholwell Hall ticked all boxes.

The house although dated was clean, comfortable and had a homely feeling. The house was on 3 floors and most of the bedrooms were of good size and some of the bedrooms were en-suite. There was enough room to add extra fold away beds on the lower floor which we needed.

In the main lounge area, there was a pool table and football game, together with karaoke machine which we all enjoyed.

The best time for us was when we could be together and have our meals in the very large dining room.

We were surprised the kitchen was not in keeping with the rest of the house, in terms of size. It has a large table and many chairs to sit round. The downside was the size of the oven and cooker. These were standard size and would not really suit large parties if you were totally self catering. We took food which we had already cooked and only needed re-heating, although there was plenty of crockery, glassware and cutlery to accommodate our large party.

Overall the house suited our purpose and I would recommend staying there.

15 of us stayed at Cholwell Hall for the weekend, the only problem was we couldn’t stay longer! There were plenty of space and everything was clean and tidy. Obviously it was an old house so it had the odd creak, cobweb and the lounge furniture was a tad tired, but it didn’t ruin what was a great weekend. The housekeeper was lovely, and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. All dealing we had with admin have been positive. If we had stayed in warmer weather the lack of pool would have been issue, but it was too cold at the end of September. The party room with Karaoke machine was made use of, luckily no neighbours to hear us! If you need a large homely house within easy reach of Bath and Bristol, and your prepared to look after it as if it’s your own don’t hesitate to book! Show less
