Vale House is a Victorian guest house in the Vale of Belvoir, Leicestershire, just below the beautiful Belvoir Castle. Its design is unique. The house has nine well-planned bedrooms and eight bathrooms, which can hold up to 23 people. There are two super king rooms, three king rooms, one quadruple room, and three king rooms that share a bathroom.

The rooms on the first floor were made for fun. There is a nice cocktail bar with pink leather seats and fancy chandeliers that make the place feel fancy for nighttime events. The kitchen has everything it needs to handle group catering, but it also has a friendly vibe, making it a great place to eat and cook with friends.

The outdoor areas are well-planned, and the terrace is a great place to eat and relax outside. A separate play area for kids keeps the younger guests busy.

The property is at the edge of a small shopping area called The Engine Yard, making it easy for guests to get to nearby craft, food, and drink shops. The interior design mixes Victorian and modern styles, making it a one-of-a-kind and memorable place.

Location and Things to Do

Vale House is conveniently located about ten minutes’ drive from the A52 and fifteen minutes from Grantham and Melton Mowbray. Nottingham is a forty-minute drive away, and the A1 is easily accessible for those coming from the South East. Regular trains are available from Melton Mowbray.

Situated on the edge of The Engine Yard, a boutique retail site with local food, drink, and artisan shops, Vale House is also near Belvoir Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland. The Castle often serves as a filming location and offers beautiful grounds with walking trails. Nearby activities include cycling, fishing, golfing, shooting, karting, and sky diving, with plenty of country pubs for refreshment.

For families, Twin Lakes, Ed and Molly’s Play Barn, and Little Jacks Farm are great options.

Weddings

Vale House provides a unique and vibrant setting for weddings, with its stylish cocktail bar and dining space. The house can accommodate a large group and offers an outdoor terrace and play area, making it an excellent choice for both intimate and larger celebrations.

Huge!! Absolutely huge I was photographer for a Bridal prep and there must have been 10+ people here, the light in the living room area is glorious for makeup and hair photos. There is even a hot tub as well.

I would not recommend for people to deal with this organisation to book accommodation or events.

I enquired about making a booking of Vale House and The Balloon Bar in July. I went to view both in August, facilitated by Honor, and confirmed that I would definitely take Vale House, but that we would wait on confirmation of The Balloon Bar once the manager had spoken to the chef to get further details so we could confirm menu options. Honor said she would email these to me asap, that she would reserve the property for me, and that I would be sent a final total combined package after a decision had been made on The Balloon Bar, so that I could pay the correct deposit amount.

Two months of silence ensued where I sent several emails to ask for the menus. I received one response saying they would be chased, and then nothing. I phoned and spoke to a new manager who said there had been a change of staff and he would investigate. I was quickly responded to saying that he appreciated communication had been poor and apologising for this, but that the accommodation had been booked by someone else – and that I had never booked it nor had they taken a deposit from me (which I had clearly stated in my email that they hadn’t).

So after 3 months, I have been left with no accommodation booking, even though I had been assured by Honor that it was being reserved for me whilst we agreed the full package details. I had explained all of the above to the new manager in an email, so to be told that I had never booked the accommodation was a pretty low blow, when I had categorically been told by Honor that it was being reserved. It was not my choice to not pay a deposit at the time, but a decision made by Honor as part of what seemed like a kind offering at the time, to put together a package price for the full accommodation and party venue booking. The poor level of communication, lack of doing what was agreed, and the final email from the new manager basically saying I’d never booked it so there, has just been an absolutely disgusting way to treat a customer.

I really wouldn’t waste your time trying to book to have a nice event at these venues.

Rented the whole house with a group and had a great time, the decoration is really fun and each room is different. Temperature was good throughout the house, upstairs was nice and warm due to the rising heat which was great imo but people who run warm may dislike that. Bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean and plenty of pillows. Each door was secure. The communal space was good, the bar/lounge area was great fun to use and the kitchen had good utilities to prepare food for a large group. The Engine Yard area nearby has a lovely bistro and garden shop and other lovely popups! Really wanted to try the fired pizza as it looked great, but didn’t have time in the end. Great quiet location with great views. My two criticisms are that the shared showers for the upstairs rooms were not good. One was hanging off the wall, the other was running when we arrived and around a corner from the light so very dark. The other is the amount of ladybird beetles in the windows of multiple rooms, not a pest but hearing fluttering wings can be disruptive to sleep.

We came here for a one night stay after visiting some family in Lincoln and Grantham. It is a beautiful building very well looked after. The check in was all self service so there was no staff around but we were given a phone number in case we needed to contact someone. We stayed in one of the family rooms and it was very well decorated with comfortable clean beds and fresh towels and linens. Although there was no ensuite there were two toilets with walk in showers just across the hall which were very clean. There was a lovely big outside area for the children or to sit and have a drink outside.

A couple of issues that reduced the quality of our stay. The first and most infuriating was the leaf blower at 7am. Incredulous about this one as the area being cleared on a Sunday doesn’t open til 10am. Which leads me to our next point, nothing opens for visiting guests, it does say ‘self catering style’ accommodation but a tiny fridge in the room with no fresh milk, just a couple of UHT samples and tea/coffee – that’s it! Nowhere does breakfast so had to travel to Grantham. Not ideal. In the evening everything seemed to close at 4pm – on a Saturday! There was a bar but as we were staying with our children again not ideal. Room itself frustrating as plenty of furniture in room but nowhere to put anything. House is filled with all sorts of accessories and ornaments (all with the prices on BTW-like you are staying in a rather gaudy shop) but again simple dressing table or side table filled with trinkets so you can only keep your stuff in suitcase and hang up a few items on the hooks on the wall?! Then the general maintenance of the place, cobwebs a plenty, we had a floorboard loose that my husband hurt his foot on. Next came the mirrored tiled bathroom that meant from the bed you could see each other sat on the toilet. How lovely. Again no simple thought in the bathroom either for a towel rail or toilet roll holder. Just stick that on the floor shall we?!

Radiator needed to be turned off in room on first arrival but TRV didn’t work so couldn’t then turn it back on. Great.

Top it off was the tiny ‘motel’ TV. About as big as an IPad. Embarrassing really as I’d spent the afternoon wandering around the opulent home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, that they couldn’t stretch to decent sized TV’s in the bedrooms shows they prefer to sell stuff and make a few quid rather than spend it.

Won’t be returning. Wouldn’t recommend.

Beautiful rooms. Great value for money for a break away. Excellent facilities in the room. Would definitely recommend and stay again in the future.
