William Jones built Treowen, a beautiful Grade I listed manor house, in 1620. It is located between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. The house has 12 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms and can accommodate 25 people. The furniture is simple and flexible, making it great for big groups. If you need more room to sleep, extra camp beds are available.

An old oak staircase connects the different levels of the house. It is thought to be the first open-well staircase in Wales. The bedrooms are on the first, second, and third floors, in a way that makes sense. There are doubles, twins, bunks, and family rooms, and many have their own bathrooms or share a bathroom with other rooms. With this setup, different groups can stay in many different ways.

The ground floor has a big kitchen and scullery, as well as a dining room that can seat up to 40 people. There are two sitting rooms, one of which can be turned into a bedroom, where you can relax. You can play games or have events for up to 85 people in the Great Hall. The drawing room has a grand piano and views of the valley. There is a hidden priest’s hole on the property, which is an interesting historical feature.

Treowen is on a 400-acre farm and forest estate. It has protected gardens, old carp ponds, and plenty of room for outdoor activities.

Location and Things to Do

Treowen is located just off the A40, about four miles from Monmouth in South Wales, with nearby train stations at Newport, Abergavenny, Hereford, Chepstow, and Gloucester offering convenient connections. Guests can enjoy charming towns like Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye, explore Tintern Abbey and various ancient castles, or take advantage of walking and cycling trails throughout the Wye Valley. Local golf clubs, pony trekking centres, and a nearby pub just over a mile away also provide plenty of options for entertainment and dining.

Treowen is a beautiful house with wonderful atmosphere, beautiful gardens and yet still well provisioned with modern facilities. In a beautiful setting, it is still easily accessible from major roads and easy to find.

Jeremy Ward

A rare surviving house with many period features and an amazing staircase. Idyllic location with expansive views.

This is the ideal Party Celebration house for hire. Set in beautiful countryside with 10 bedrooms. It’s an Elizabethan masterpiece built originally as a Manor house . There are quite a few well sized function rooms on the ground floor suitable for live band or dj. also kitchen and various reception rooms. The only downside to having a party here is because it has only 10 bedrooms many of the party guests would need to appoint a designated driver. There is ample car parking space.

Went for the Key of Dreams experience. The manor is stunning and authentic feeling. The grounds too are beautiful and we were fortunate to have lovely sunny weather. Loved the manor but don’t expect to have a luxury hotel in the sense of all sorts of modern luxuries.

A real gem of a property, well worth a visit, we spent a few hours in and around the property, had a picnic on the lawn, our own food, we will return.

Lovely venue, Wedding was fantastic. Dog friendly. Superb.

Emmylou Treadwell

What an incredible wedding we had here at Treowen. When i first viewed here i honestly didn’t think it could get any better. But i was happily wrong. There is so much available which isn’t mentioned on the website and this was so much more compared to other venues i had viewed.

They were so relaxed and genuinely just wanted you to have the wedding you wanted. to hidden add ons or restrictions. no list of suppliers you HAD to use. of course they would recommend, but only based on who others had used.

Communication has been incredible. It’s been 2 years of planning for us and they never got annoyed with my many, many emails. They were happy for us to visit as needed to measure things or to meet suppliers. Over the course of the planning they added even more to the house which meant we didn’t have to source these things ourselves. The house itself is incredible. So clean and well looked after. Danielle does an amazing job! We cannot wait to come back for a christmas or anniversary! thank you!

Lovely place to fish, peaceful location, what more could you want?

I visited Treowen to attend the wedding of two friends. It was a lovely and house as the venue was a delightful bonus due to its history and size.

Only draw back was the path from the main road to the house. While it started very well, it suddenly becomes very ‘Roman.’ So drive carefully to not damaged the underside of your car

Totally magical break from all the Covid concerns. The house is both majestic and charming and all felt at home instantly. Huge grounds and loads of space inside too. Worked perfectly for our group (and 3 dogs) with enough space and activities for all to do their own thing and a dining room that allowed very social evening meals. Spent most of our time in the house but lots of things to do locally and indeed we did go canoeing on the canal – enjoyable even with the rain! We’re all very keen to return and get back into the Treowen way of life. The only reason to hesitate in recommending to others is that you might want to book the same time as us! John was a great host and always contactable to answer questions.

Lovely 17th Century house, with plenty of character. Loads of period rooms and a priest hole to boot. Definitely recommended, if you want to tell ghost stories and explore Monmouth.

Tracy Atkinson

Wonderful location really lovely house very authentic

Thor Halfreðurson

A magnificent 17th century house in glorious surroundings. We were taken around by the owners niece, who was an absolute delight.

Wow, what a treat. Our group of 32 family and friends spent the most wonderful weekend celebrating at Treowen and loved every moment of it. We are looking forward to returning.

We booked Treowen for a team meeting – so much better than all staying in a hotel. The house is impressive in every way – fantastic grounds, great bedrooms and communal areas. There is WiFi in the building, reception is stronger in some areas than others,we knew this going in & wanted to be a bit cut off from distraction so it worked perfectly for us. With runners and mountain bikers in our team there were places to head off to in persuit of outdoor fun. The owners were great, right there when we needed them and they left us to our own devices as well. I would absolutely recommend Treowen as a place to escape to for. We are very likely to go back.

Stunning grounds, mostly amazing place to visit for a party. However, a bit rough around the edges in places.

Sanne1975

Wonderful old Welsh manor house! We picked fresh apples from the orchard and took lovely walks around the house. Truly a place to feel transported back to past days 🙂

Sara Ö

The location is amazing; nothing but the beautiful Welsh landscape on all sides. The house itself is a real gem. Modern bathrooms and other facilities don’t not intrude on the feeling of the house, who has kept a lot of its very special character. I spent a magical weekend at Treowen, and I very much hope I will be able to visit again soon!

Julian L

Amazing location! Very Atmospheric, great rooms – it was even pleasantly warm. Highly recommended as a location to hire for events.

This was the best possible setting for a Regency larp with added faerie! Absolutely magical setting, with the correct amount of mystery, mist, and confusion! Complete with hidden servants staircase, grand main entrance, magnificent stairwell, priests hole, and attics!

Comfy beds, loads of space, areas of both elegance and comfort, an excellent kitchen, and the house itself took on character for our adventure.

James F

An absolutely beautiful building, with huge rooms and numerous period features: scarily easy to forget what time period you are living in and be immersed in the fantastic atmosphere. Skilfully modernised with showers and toilets and a great kitchen, so you get modern comforts as well!

Melanie S

We were here for an event, and this house was the perfect period setting. It is fabulously gorgeous, very well equipped, with modern plumbing and all the usual creature comforts. Mobile reception is sketchy, but some networks had good coverage, and the worst had some outside! No reflection on the venue, just a handy bit of advice 🙂 The gardens and grounds are lovely, and I highly recommend Treowen House for any gatherings or functions. Particularly good for Dr Who and Torchwood fans as well, as some episodes were filmed here!!

Meryn Cutler

It’s an amazing 17th century house set in gorgeous surroundings. We spent two nights with our friends here for a fortieth birthday party. The bedrooms are incredible, set on three floors and accessed by two separate staircases. Would be great for a murder mystery party! The only slight thing I would change was our mattress… Could do with a topper as it was a bit lumpy. Kitchen has a huge range and everything was working well. Would love to go back.
