Buckland House is a Georgian country house in the most relaxed and welcoming of styles. It is a big, grand, and beautiful house, sleeping 30 in 17 bedrooms with 9 bathrooms. The house has 7 doubles, 5 twin singles, and 3 singles, with options for a few more in extra beds by negotiation. Most of the bathrooms have roll-top baths, and two have showers.

There is a ballroom for dancing, dining room, sitting rooms, library, snooker room, drawing room, breakfast room and playroom. The house is heated by an industrial wood-burning boiler and wood is sourced from the estate. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, cooking utensils and an ample amount of crockery and cutlery for 30 guests. To cook on there is an Aga and a large 6 ring gas cooker, the pantry has plenty of shelf space, 2 fridge freezers and one full height fridge.

The house is set within 289 acres of parkland, farmland and woods, and has terraces and a swimming pool next to the house. There is also a lake, with rowing boat and lots of fish (carp, roach, tench), plus a croquet lawn. Roe deer are regularly seen in the parkland. It really is a generous house, light-filled and seemingly perfect for a party, no matter what the time of year.

House Fact

The Manor House dates to the time of William the Conqueror, in 1066, and was given to one of William’s returning soldiers, Richard de Filleigh. Richard had used his shield to save William from arrows on three occasions, and for this reason he was called Fortescue (Fort = Strong, Escue = Shield), and Buckland House was built in the shape of an F. In rather more modern times, Sienna Miller celebrated her sister Savannah’s wedding at Buckland House in 2005.

Edmund's Choice of Extraordinary Feature

“Buckland is one of my favourites of our houses, and the one at which I’ve spent the most time. It really is a generous house, light-filled and seemingly perfect for a party, no matter what the time of year. It’s most stand-out attribute is its atmosphere and sense of timelessness. Some sun-lit summer evenings, it could easily be any time this century, or the last.”

Stunning, huge Manor House, thoughtfully decorated for Xmas with two huge trees. Very large bedrooms and lots of spaces for entertaining. We spent new year here with several families. Grand dining room. Excellent for sardines and hide and seek! Bit chilly but closing the curtains the heaters soon warmed the place up. Woods are great for walking dogs. Would benefit from more showers or attachments for the many bathrooms.

Great venue and lovely house.

We loved Buckland House. Grounds are gorgeous and the house is huge and very grand, if a bit crumbly around the edges. A word of warning to those afraid of beasties: we had tens of baby toads trapped in the pool filters every day (which we rescued as they were getting tired and drowning – please check the filters for critters! I’ve asked the owner to consider adding a wildlife ladder) and we also had bats flying and roosting inside the house (apparently this isn’t normal but it was certainly a big feature of our week). Owners were friendly and always on hand to help out though!

Over the last weekend in June 32 members of our family took over Buckland House – and what a superb time we had. Our hosts were terrific: nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel at home, kids, dogs, adults and all. Though the grand house would be better for an extra shower or two, there was nothing more we could have wished for: we had rolling acres, huge bedrooms, a pool and a pool table, snooker, table tennis, croquet, a ballroom and banqueting hall. Fantastic!

Amazing venue for Stag Do weekend! Thank you for great communication, incredible house, gardens and a fantastic weekend.

We had a great family holiday here. There was so much space for us all to use and enjoy. It was lovely and peaceful. We really enjoyed using the pool, and also swam and paddled boarded on the lake every day. The only downfall was there was only 1 shower in the house, all the other bathrooms had baths which was sometimes inconvenient, but there was never a shortage of hot water! The house was well stocked for the number of guests, with plenty of crockery/cutlery etc. Some of the beds could do with being improved.

We had a fabulous time at Buckland House, despite the english weather. We took SUPs and messed around on the lake or in the swimming pool during the day and planned different events in the evenings. The ballroom is a fabulous space, with a piano. We set up band equipment in there for the evenings. There were 26 of us, and it was great to have a dining room table that everyone could sit at and be together The kitchen has an aga, so lovely and warm and cosy, and a great pantry for food storage. It is an old house, with creaky floorboards, and time honoured has baths instead of showers, but that just adds to the feel and character of the house. The grounds are kept beautifully, which you are free to explore. There’s even a beautiful church in the grounds that has regular services. We had an incredible holiday here, which we will cherish.

I was here from 1952 to 1956 when it was a private boys boarding school. Four of the best years of my life. I swam in the lake, played badminton in one of the large halls, and sang in the church choir. To spend term times here coming from a crowded city was a treat.

Lovely place i ever seen Thank you guys.

We used the house for a Stag Party.

It was excellent, the place offered a lot for a group to do over the weekend.

It is a fantastic house but has worn around the edges.

Would recommend

A bit grand, a bit tired….

Grand old house that’s available for private hire. We went to a wedding and this was a perfect setting.

We had a large family weekend gathering here and it was excellent. Lovely rural location, loads of charm and character living the life of ‘Lords of the Manor’ for a couple of days.

We got married at Buckland House August Bank Holiday 2021 weekend and it was the most perfect location, setting and house. We had amazing weather, which meant we were able to use the pool and lake – and some guests went running in the extensive grounds. We were able to book our own caterers, band, photographer etc which gave us the freedom to do what we wanted for the whole event. We couldn’t have found a better place to have our wedding. Thank you Suzanne and Ralph!

My partner Mrs Slocombe and I just love to cater for events at this venue. Tonight was no exception with a feast for 18 with locally sourced meat, home made artisan breads and a food display full of colour.

Mrs Slocombe

I regularly provide catering services for Buckland House, it’s right on my doorstep so handy to get to. I absolutely love this house, the history can be felt as soon as you walk in the door. Situated perfectly for exploration of Dartmoor and Exmoor and having close to hand RHS Garden Rosemoor and plenty of events at the nearby Plough Arts Centre in Torrington. I love this place so much I featured it in my recently released cookery book under ‘Feasts for a Gathering’. mrsslocombe.uk

Love this place has everything you need for a celebration event.

Lovely place where we got married…amazing time and lovely venue.

Just spent a wonderful weekend there celebrating a friends special birthday. It is an amazing place that is well worth a visit.for that unique occasion. More poignant because three of our party had been there as borders when it was a school and others had attended functions there over 30 years ago.

Hello, just spent six days at Buckland House, a beautiful country retreat with excellent accommodation, first class services, good kitchen facilities with a swimming pool and surrounded by lovely countryside . Several of the older generation in the group have decided we would really like to repeat the experience. Many of the younger people present were also of the same opinion. The place ticks all the boxes.

Bob Darby

amazing location and great facilities for a group occassion .

I cannot express what a wonderful and special place this is. My daughter celebrated her wedding here last week and we all had the most amazing time that we are coming back !

We adored our time at Buckland House and are missing it already. It’s such a great mix of homely and opulent and the perfect setting for our rustic country wedding. Everyone who came loved the venue and it’s so wonderful to have the run of the manor for the whole weekend so you really can do things to way you want them. Wouldn’t have changed a thing!

Polly Putt

I really cannot express how beautiful Buckland House is. We had the most wonderful weekend here for my husband's 40th birthday, with room for feasts, dancing, roaming the grounds and more. A truly exceptional place, with rooms filled with history and something interesting to see around every corner. I cannot recommend it enough! Thank you x

Rohan “deathcurzo” Patel

Great place with huge functionality. The house is less maintained in some areas more than others, and a new central heating system would be useful. However I do understand this may be hard due to the age of this historical building. Overall a nice place.

Martin Thomas

Great venue for a big party, wedding, birthday etc.

Nicole Tod

Stayed there 2 nights for a wedding anniversary. We were 25 people in total and there was plenty of room for us all but not too much so that we were rattling about. It was lovely and warm inpsite of the huge rooms and we loved the history and character of the house. The kitchen was well equipped, beds all made up with towels and it as just a great weekend.

Toni Goodwin

It was the perfect venue for a large family Christmas celebration!

Liz Waters

Buckland house has lovely grounds and is beautifully remote. It is peaceful and prefect for a long week away. Some rooms have been more well kept than others, and you can tell the place has been well lived in. The kitchen is fantastic for cooking large meals up to 30people, and the dining room can seat ~25 around the large table. The pool is well maintained but not heated, so enter if you dare (or after a few days of good sun).

I can't really explain just how magical Buckland House is but I am going to try! From our very first emails, the initial viewings, the booking, and then right through to the wedding weekend itself: Tammy, Suzanne and Ralph have been absolutely wonderful. In England, you just cannot rely on the weather, so we were very keen to have a venue which was all about the interior space. We accidently found Buckland House while researching rentable holiday homes as opposed to wedding venues! It could sleep 30 of our guests, was exclusively yours for the entire weekend, had no curfew, no corkage, and had a wedding licence too. It meant we could build our wedding exactly how we wanted it, and have our ceremony and reception all in one place, cutting out transportation: A shabby chic DIY dream! The moment I saw photos, I fell in love and made arrangements to view it immediately. Suffice to say, the visit blew us away! It was like being in a National Trust house but with zero restrictions. The interior space is huge, and it is so impressive inside that not a lot of decoration was needed. There was plenty of room should the weather be horrible all weekend (which it was, although thankfully we had a few breaks in the rain and could get out for photos). It is also surrounded by 280 acres of gorgeous grounds (some of which we adorned with a flock of retro lawn flamingos), so had the weather ended up being amazing, it would have been an added bonus rather the focus of our day. Buckland served as a fantastic base from which to host a whole weekends worth of celebrations in the Devon countryside and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. We only spent 4 days there, but miss it so much!!

We had the most amazing weekend with friends in this beautiful country mansion which takes you back in time – the grounds are extensive and the kitchen – dining room – galleried ballroom – library – billiard room – all the different bedrooms – hidden passages – our 16 year old boys discovered many hidden parts to this house – it was like an Enid Blyton novel – 16 folks from Essex do ‘Most Haunted’ would love to relive our party weekend again – never forget this place – thank you x

Annie Hayman

We stayed for my 50th Birthday, A wonderful setting for such an occasion. We all had a great time, thanks.

Robert Mark Irwin

Me and my mate Sean did a show there some years ago now for some guests a beautiful place

Tony Pallett

Beautiful building lots of character far to many to list if you use your imagination you could sit in a room and go back 500 years ago the feeling would be immense, the garden and the shrubs plus the boating lake, a fortnights holiday would not be long enough to take it all in .

Matt Taylor

My friends got married there 2 years ago… They had the place for a week from Wednesday to Wednesday… It was rather lovely….! M x

A really phenomenal venue, the perfect weekend away for a large group. Amazing grounds, perfect entertaining spaces and a lovely Devon pub a shortish walk away. We'll be back 🙂

Roy Allen

It was a fantastic site when arriving and you start walking around the inside in amazement it's fantastic but once you have settled in you realise it needs a lot work doing and on winter very cold.

Simon Gilbert

Brilliant location very well maintained with such interesting furnishings and books the walk options in the woodlands and the drives in the countryside are further incentives should you be looking!

Jane Walker

Delightful venue for any big celebration ie wedding etc – the only reason l gave 4 star instead of 5 as that our particular wedding was in February so it was jolly chilly and the heating seemed a little inadequate !!

Rachel Lake

Amazing wedding weekend! Made us feel very welcome and extremely helpful. Fantastic venue for a wedding and our family loved staying for the weekend! Thinking about booking for a big family Christmas now 🙂

Magical

Landed Houses

Buckland House is a splendid property on many levels – its majesty, number of bedrooms and its price per person. It has two dining rooms, two large sitting rooms, two games rooms (table tennis, billiards) and a ballroom. Outside there is a swimming pool (perhaps not for January use), a lake and 200 acres of countryside to run around in without disturbing the neighbours. The upstairs accommodation consists of decent sized bedrooms, some enormous, and a range of bathrooms that are fit for purpose. They are not modern with spotlights, underfloor heating and similar but are clean and homely. The owners live nearby and are easy going and spend a lot of time, as you would expect, keeping the house going. The odd bit of plaster is missing and the odd window frame drafty but I do not think any but the most demanding guests could take issue. One of the best houses I know of that sleeps 26+ and a super venue for your big event. Floor plans.

From the website;

On the first floor there are 15 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. 2 bedrooms have double 4 poster beds and another has a single 4 poster bed. Of the rest there are 5 with double beds and 5 with twin singles and 2 with single beds. Many of the bedrooms have coal effect fires and one has a study and another a large nursery with 2 cots. Five of the bedrooms have Victorian ball and claw baths, 2 with normal baths and 2 with showers.
