Howsham Hall is a fabulous Jacobean country house in Yorkshire, perfect for the very finest event a guest might like to attend. The house is particularly suited to weddings, special celebrations and corporate events, and is available both as exclusive-use or room-by-room basis during quieter months.
Howsham has 12 bedrooms – a delightful 18 bathrooms – and can sleep 24 guests. For a small cost, children under twelve can be accommodated in each room, although they’ll be on a put-up bed. Each room is generously proportioned, and has rural views of the wolds of East Riding.
Guests enter the house via the Great Hall, which is huge, double-height and perfect for dancing. There are lots of Doric columns, essential to hide behind, should toe-crunching fox-trotters approach. Various rooms lead off from the Great Hall, including the drawing room, which overlooks the terrace. There’s a further hall beyond the Great Hall, with the house’s grand staircase, and then a dining room, which seats 24.
There is much more to explore – both a ‘family’ kitchen and catering kitchen (Howsham offers a full house-keeping team, including chefs), a games room with snooker table, panelled library, small study, breakfast room, playroom, cloakroom (with gun cabinet), wine cellars and gym.
The house sits in its own valley of about eighty acres, designed by Capability Brown. There are over ten acres of lawn, and in front of the house is a cricket pitch, which has been played upon for over fifty years. There is also a folly and an ice-house tucked within the gardens, and three giant Sequoia trees (or Giant Redwoods) , dating from the 1800’s. The River Derwent runs about half a mile from the house, and makes for the most romantic of afternoon walks to the ruins of Kirkham Priory.
Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“Howsham Hall is a very special place, combining all the grandeur and Lords-and-Ladies living of the past (including excellent staff), with modern luxuries and immaculate presentation. Great for parties that will really impress.”
About the Location
The Hall is just outside the pretty village of Howsham, about 14 miles from the historic City of York. York has trains running in on a direct route from most major cities (it takes about two hours, from Kings Cross, London). A taxi would take about 30 minutes to reach the house from the station.
Things To Do
The busy market town of Malton is ten miles away, with plenty of shops and a farmers’ market (and a train station). There’s no end of distractions in York itself, and York Racecourse is about twenty minutes’ drive from the house. Should you wish to admire a truly ginormous country house, on a much larger scale than Howsham, then Castle Howard is about a fifteen minute journey by car.
Howsham Hall makes a superb venue for a wedding, and the experienced in-house team can help as much or as little as you would like. The Hall itself holds a civil ceremony license, or couples can be married in the village church, St John’s. The house can hold 160 guests inside.
Alternatively, the event team can arrange a marquee on the lawns, seating up to 2,000 guests.
