Leuchie Walled Garden

Leuchie Walled Garden was originally built in the 1960’s, as a retreat for the Dalrymple family. It has been extensively renovated as a holiday house, and now sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 bedrooms. It works very well for parties of family or friends, and there’s lots to do in the area.

Of the six bedrooms, three are superkings, two are kingsize and one is set up as twin beds. There are four bedrooms on the ground floor, each with their own en-suite, or allocated bathroom. There are two bedrooms upstairs beneath the eaves, sharing a shower room. The two king size beds can be presented as singles, should you need them to be.

The reception rooms include a drawing room, with a grand piano and wood-burning stove, and a television room. The kitchen is large and sociable, with a big table (seating 12) for traditional Scottish breakfast, or for kitchen sups (there’s a second ‘service’ kitchen for those with more ambitious culinary plans).  Should you decide to banquet, there’s a separate dining room, which seats 12.

There are also two games rooms, with a snooker table, table tennis and darts.

The house is set in a walled garden of about five acres. The north half has been restored with a hundred-foot herbaceous border, and the south half has been restored with a working kitchen garden. Guests are welcome to harvest fruit, vegetables and pick flowers, according to the season. Also in the garden in an all-weather tennis court, a golf-pitch range, a croquet lawn and boules. There’s also a fire pit, for cooler nights of summer star-gazing.

The walled garden is within the greater estate, and there are almost 60 acres of landscaped grounds in which to walk.

About the location

Leuchie is about a mile from the Scottish seaside town of North Berwick, about an hour’s drive from Edinburgh. There is a main-line train station in North Berwick.

Things To Do

Leuchie is very close to the coast, and within easy reach of several lovely beaches, including Yellowcraig, Seacliffe and the bay of North Berwick. North Berwick itself is great to visit – there’s the famous Scottish Sea Bird Centre, and lots of cafes, independent shops and bars. The area is famous for its golf courses – there are 12 within twenty minutes’ drive of the house.

North Berwick holds its own Highland Games, a Fringe festival and Puffin Fest, which celebrates the return of puffins back to the Bass Rock.

Weather permitting, the owner of the house can arrange for trips around the Bass Rock, whose 150,000 gannets David Attenborough described as one of the wonders of the natural world. Also nearby are the islands of Craigleith, famous for its seals and puffins, and Fidra, as well as Aberlady Nature Reserve and the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick.

Weddings for up to 24 guests can be held in the house, or a purpose-built marquee can be erected in the garden for larger numbers.
