Croxton Park House
About Croxton Park House
Croxton Park House is part of the Croxton Park Estate in Leicestershire, owned by the Duchess of Rutland. The house was once a hunting lodge for the Dukes, and has now been renovated to make a family holiday cottage. Emma, the Duchess of Rutland, led the renovation herself, taking inspiration from her home, Belvoir Castle.
There are five bedrooms across the first and second floors, each sharing two good-sized bathrooms. There are enough beds for 12 guests, in a variety of single and double beds. One of the rooms holds both a double and single, and has an en-suite. One of the beds is a four-poster, hung with heavy velvet and brocade curtains. Perfect for any chilly nights! For any pony-mad little children, there’s a rocking horse on the landing.
Downstairs, there is a sensible kitchen with a double range cooker, and a breakfast room with a scrubbed-pine table, seating six or so. There is also a separate dining room with a round table, that seats 10 in comfort.
The sitting room is large and comfortable, with an open fire and deep, sin-inducing sofas, thickly piled with cushions.
The house has a walled back garden with views over the surrounding parkland and mature fruit trees. The front of the house faces a short grassy ride down to one of the medieval fish ponds. Croxton Park is a private estate with limited public foot paths, which makes for a very peaceful space to spend time with family and friends.
Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“As with any of the Duchess’s houses, the decor is playful and extraordinary. I particularly love the twin feather-fringed looking glasses, hung in the sitting room.”
About the Location
Croxton Park Lodge is about a 15-minute drive from the Leicestershire market towns of Grantham or Melton Mowbray.
Things To Do
There are a lot of decent walks in the area, as well as villages with interesting histories (the village most local to the house, Croxton Kerrial, has a decent pub). Melton Mowbray is a lovely place to visit, as is Belvoir Castle. If there are children in your party, you might like Twin Lakes Park, a theme park with rides and slides.
