There has been a house at Crogen (pronounced Crog to rhyme with Frog – Crog-‘n) since the 1300’s. It underwent renovation and modernisation in 1831, by the Earl of Dudley. The Earl wished to use Crogen as his hunting lodge, and the estate still runs an enormously successful shoot today. The estate was leased and then bought by Henry Robertson in 1864 – Henry was a civil engineer, entrepreneur, industrialist and politician who also built Palé Hall nearby. In 1889, Queen Victoria came to stay with the Robertsons and Crogen still has much of the memorabilia from that visit. The house remains in the Robertson family.
The estate sleeps up to 46 in flexible accommodation.
Sleeps 12 in 6 bedrooms with 5 bathrooms. The Hall sits in lovely gardens, and has a tennis court in what once was the walled kitchen gardens and the River Dee running through the back of the main garden.
The Coach House
Sleeps 16 in 8 bedrooms, with 5 bathrooms (2 of which are en-suite). The reception rooms include a large kitchen with Aga and woodburning stove, dining room and drawing room with open fires, and games room with table tennis. The house has a private walled garden, and a south-facing veranda with terrace – perfect for al fresco dining. The Coach House is available to rent separately, priced from £1,500.
Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. There is also a sofa bed for an extra 2 in the sitting room, and a kitchen with a dining table. The Wing has its own entrance and parking and is newly renovated.
Sleeps 2 in 1 large bedroom. Downstairs is a galley kitchen and a sitting room with a dining table. ‘Bryn Awel’ means ‘windy hill’ in Welsh, but it’s the hill that offers the beautiful views – not much wind ever gets through the cottage’s thick walls!
Sleeps 12 self-caterering guests. It is owned by a family member and is situated just over the River Dee from the main estate.
About The Estate
The Crogen Estate rolls over 2500 acres of North Wales, with superb country sport and outdoor pursuits literally on the doorstep. ‘Get Wet – The Adventure Company’ operates from Coed Craig-Crogen, a woodland on the south of the estate. Amongst other things, Get Wet offers high ropes, paint-balling, gorge-walking, raft-building and other river activities – and is only a gentle walk from the main estate properties.
The river Dee runs through the estate, and there is a summerhouse on the banks, which can be hired for parties, wedding receptions or BBQ’s.
There is also plenty to do off the estate; Portmeirion Village (famous for being built to show how architecture can enhance natural landscape) is close by, as is Snowdonia National Park, and some of the best white-water rafting in Wales.
Crogen Estate is suitable for parties of friends or family, reunions, sporting breaks, special celebrations and weddings, stag and hen parties. It is also suitable for corporate and business use, or retreats. The total venue capacity for weddings is 200; conditional upon a marquee.
Grayling and salmon (when in season), on the River Dee. Please call Crogen for details.
