Downton Abbey… and real life!

There is an interesting article in the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/luxuryhomes/8757891/The-real-Downton-Abbey-Own-a-country-estate.html) about the differences between Downton Abbey and real life. The days of servants’ quarters filled with servants have all but disappeared and most are left to pay ever-mounting bills for heating, roofing and general maintenance. However the growth of the short-term rental market suggests that owners are looking for sensible ways to drive money from the estate and afford its upkeep. There are plenty of manor houses on Landed Houses which more than pay their way and it is possible to maintain, even improve, properties by renting them out for weeks and weekends. Guests can (and should) be vetted and insurance can be taken out to provide peace of mind… fortunately we have never heard of it needing to be used!
