House Facts

The first house was built in the 1660s as a Palladian brick mansion and was transformed in the early 19th century into a magnificent neoclassical residence resembling a Greek temple, complete with a resplendent Doric portico. After years of neglect, the house was dramatically saved from demolition in 1975 when it was taken into state care, and now provides a striking venue for an annual festival of opera.

The Grange is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Europe and is a grade 1 listed building.

The Prince Regent (later King George IV) leased the house in the 1700s as a hunting lodge. In March 1944 Churchill and Eisenhower met in the Picture Gallery of The Grange to discuss the Normandy landings. In 2017 Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin brought a Hollywood crew of 150 to The Grange to film the H&M/Erdem collaboration launch film.
