Stretton House is a Victorian country manor in Derbyshire, just outside the Peak District National Park. It is ideally suited for large family parties, weekends with friends, and corporate use.
The house has 13 bedrooms (10 of which are en-suite, and three of which are flexible family rooms). There are an additional two bathrooms. The rooms are all large and light-filled; some of the rooms have four poster beds.
Stretton is a big house, and its reception rooms are just as generous as its bedrooms. There’s an elegant drawing room, with long sofas and an open fire; a library and a large dining room, which stretches the width of the house, and is perfect for a formal dinner party (or conference table, should you be there to work).
There is also a bar lounge and a sun lounge, and large conservatory, which will seat the household of guests for more informal dining.
In the Games Annex, there is a games room with pool table and table football, and a playroom for younger children, complete with rocking horse.
There are also two kitchens, East and West, both of which are well-equipped and easy to use.
Outside, the terraces offer views of the woods and the lake, and lead down to formal gardens, including a knot garden. The lawns are perfect for a high-stakes game of croquet, and there’s a children’s play area. Guests are welcome to enjoy drinks or a BBQ on the terrace, and there’s adequate seating for everybody to sit together.
Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“One thing that I think Victorian country houses do beautifully, is a grand entrance and stair case, and the one at Stretton House really is impressive. It has colonnades and hand-carved balustrades, and makes a fantastic area for welcoming guests for drinks.”
