DESCRIPTION

Once part of King Henry VIII’s Royal Estate, Montacute Court is a wisteria-clad country house in the wild and lovely depths of the  Somerset levels.

It’s ideal for family holidays or special celebrations with friends. The house has thirteen bedrooms, and can sleep up to 28 (although some of the bedrooms are more suited to children).   There are two ‘family suite’ rooms with adjacent bedrooms and large bathrooms, then a mix of single and double bedrooms, including a room with 4 single beds – ideal for older children. The winter drawing room (on the ground floor) can also be used as a bedroom, if needs be.

There are seven bathrooms in all, some of which are en-suite. There is also a lift,  should any of your guests be troubled by stairs.

On the first floor is a large sitting room, and on the second floor is a Games Room (great for stashing teenagers, with a TV and a selection of board games).

Downstairs, the entrance hall leads to the dining room, which seats 20, and makes the perfect place for fabulous feasts. There is also a conservatory off the kitchen, which seats 12 for less formal breakfast or lunch. The kitchen itself has a table for 8.

There are two drawing rooms – the Summer Drawing Room and the Winter Drawing Room. Both are large and beautifully panelled, with open fireplaces and comfortable sofas. The Summer Drawing Room looks out over the gardens and the sun terrace.

The gardens roll over several acres, and there’s a hot tub and all-weather tennis court. There’s also plenty of outdoor seating and a fire-pit BBQ.

Guests visiting in late Spring, early Summer, can drift off to the Peony Garden, and enjoy the scrumptious blowsiness of full-blooming peonies.

Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature

“One of the most striking things about this house, is how light-filled the rooms – especially the bedrooms – appear to be. It makes the house a complete joy to stay in, even in the depths of a Somerset winter.”

About the Location

Montacute Court is beside the church, in the traditional Somerset village of Tintinhull. It’s about 15 minutes from the town of Yeovil, with its ‘Yeovil Junction’ train station. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from central London. If you’re coming from North of London, the village is on the Fosse Way, and about twenty minutes from the Taunton junction of the M5.

Things To Do

Montacute Court is on the edge of the West Country, with Wookey Hole and the Cheddar Gorge within driving distance. There are lots of nature reserves close to house, including South Hill, an area of ancient grasslands, great for walking.

The village of Tintinhull has a swimming pool and a lovely pub, called The Crown and Victoria.

House History

Montacute Court is a Grade l Listed house constructed of Hamstone with stone mullion windows. It was originally built as the parsonage for the nearby St Margaret's Church. The winter drawing room was the original hall and lodgings of the priests' house, and the first floor study was a bed chamber. The house once belonged to the estates of Henry VIII, and was later sold to Sir William Petre.
