Monnington House and Cottage is close to the River Wye, in Herefordshire, near the Welsh border. It’s on the edge of a family farm, which still tends its traditional cider orchards.
The main house sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 large, en-suite bedrooms. The cottage sleeps a further 6 guests in 3 bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor, for any guests who’d rather not use stairs. Although the cottage is self-contained, the main house has been designed to cater for 18 guests, so everyone can dine and relax together, if they please (or else retreat, if the main house contains lots of toddlers, and you long for a little peace).
The cottage has a small kitchen, ideal for breakfast, and the main house has a large kitchen which leads to a dining area with French windows overlooking the garden. There are three further rooms – a snug (with a large television), a sitting room, and then a drawing room, with space to play cards or board games. There is also a barn with a pool table and table-tennis, completely perfect for stashing teenagers.
Outside, there are 2 acres of garden about which to wander, and two terraces, upon which to recline. One of the terraces has seating for 20, and a BBQ and one of the lawns has a badminton net. There is also a paddock, with football goals.
On a practical level, there’s a boot-room, larder and a secure stable where you can keep your bicycles. The pub is within walking distance.
Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“This is the perfect house for a party with all ages – there’s a lot to do, and stacks of space to do it in.”
About the Location
Monnington House is in central Herefordshire, not far from the M5. The nearest town is Hereford, and Hay-on-Wye is about 20 minutes’ drive away. It’s about 20 minutes’ bus drive from the train station at Hereford.
Things To Do
Monnington is on the Wye Valley Walk and is close to Cider Cycling routes (which is a thing). The Wye itself has lots to do – canoeing, kayaking and paddle-boarding. Hay-on-Wye is lovely to visit for its bookshops, and Leominster is close enough to amble around if you like antiques. And pubs.
There are lots of public footpath routes, for keen walkers, and pony-trekking, for less keen walkers.
