Droxford Road, Swanmore, Hampshire, SO32 2PY
The owners of Hill Place are moving back into the property and are not taking any further bookings. We know, we’re sad too. Please search to find an active property on Landed Houses – hopefully you’ll find just the one for you!
Hill Place is a gracious Georgian country villa, on the South Hams of Hampshire. The house is perfect parties of friends and families, reunions, weddings and special celebrations. It is also suitable for corporate and business use.
The reception rooms are a splendid example of Georgian living, and are high ceilinged, huge, and flooded with light from the tall windows. They include a drawing room, morning room, library, Great Hall, then also a Games Room, Media Room, kitchens and – best of all – an incredible roof terrace, to savour all that you survey.

House Facts
Captain Roger Martin bought the tithing of Hill in 1753, with his prize-money for capturing two Spanish galleons in 1741. The land was then passed to his great-nephew, Richard Goodlad, who was a keen amateur botanist. Richard starting building Hill Place in 1791, finally living in it in 1801, when he retired from a post as a senior merchant in the East India Company.

Just spent a most wonderful weekend at Hill Place, celebrating our parents' Golden Wedding Anniversary. It was intimate affair, only 9 of us, but the house felt homely and very cosy - we absolutely loved every minute of it. We were superbly looked after by Ann and Gemma (Small Pieces catering), who were so welcoming and brought so much warmth to the whole proceedings. I cannot recommend them or this venue enough! Thank you too Will and Becky, you have a beautiful home, thanks for sharing...sorry we never got to meet you.

We arrived for a weekend to spend time with family for a wedding locally. The bride and her bridesmaids and a few of the close family (and gorgeous dog) stayed the night before the wedding. We were greeted by roaring log fires and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The house is beautiful, old and elegant but feels a very friendly and relaxed place to stay. The dinning room was beautiful and large enough for a family dinner and the kitchen had everything needed. In the morning, there was plenty of space for a "downstairs bridal dressing room," showers for everyone, breakfast and chilling with a glass of champagne without getting in each others way. Beautiful house that I could imagine being a stunning Christmas family retreat too. Many thanks.Show less

Had the most perfect Easter weekend with family and friends in this wonderful place. For such a stunning and traditional house, it holds a deep homely charm and we never felt as though we were imposing; it was all very relaxed and comfortable. The building and grounds were truly beautiful, lovingly kept and were such fun to explore! The Hill Place team were exceptional - very helpful, warm and welcoming. My points of contact were with Will, Becky and Laura, who were incredibly generous, thoughtful and open. Thank you for making our weekend there so special and thank you for sharing such a gem with the public.

Hired Hill Place for a 'special' birthday in January. There were 5 couples and 4 teenagers and everyone was happy with the sleeping arrangements. Be aware that not every room has en suite but there were plenty of bathrooms and toilets for those without. Overall we were really happy with this as a venue for a memorable weekend.

Welcoming, friendly, big and cosy all in one, fantastic views and lovely grounds. The day rooms are relaxing, the bedrooms and en suites all done to a very high standard - slept like a dream! Kitchen is warm and a great meeting place for friends and family! Smallpiece catering provided the food for the weekend and it was delicious. Will and Becs Dobson have created something special and I would highly recommend it - a real treat

We chose this as a venue to get married, it's awesome! We had a magical day and everyone commented about this amazing place. Things like hidden gem, perfect place etc etc. The owners are warm generous people who allow you to take over their home. The wedding co ordinators Gemma and Ann literally do everything to make you feel special. It's grand but laid back, vast but cosy x

Attended a wedding here and found it absolutely magical

We booked Hill Place for our wedding. Amazing day, and everyone congratulated us on 'how much work' we had done. In truth, Sarah (Peggy) and her team did it all; from initial meetings and discussions, to follow up walk through, along with fabulous Vanilla caterers, they made the day smooth and efficient. The house was stunning - a good mix of elegance and charm, without being uncomfortably un-home-ish. Kitchen perfect, bedrooms amazing, bathrooms charming; living rooms pretty; canter levered staircase incredible. Views and grounds perfect. A perfect mix of smart and comfortable which was the ideal setting for our day.

I was delighted to be invited to a wedding at this lovely venue. It is a little tired in places but this just adds to its wonderful ambience and sense of occasion. The whole place is yours for the day and if you choose Smallpiece Catering to prepare your food, you cannot go wrong. Gemma and Anne from Smallpiece could not do enough to make the day special and I cannot remember ever having had such lovely food at a wedding before, or as much. There are enough rooms to retire to if you want to get away from the music and the grounds are lovely for formal photo taking. The steps to the rear gardens make for a lovely photoshoot and there is even the possibility of going up to the roof for a photo. Wonderful. Hill Place and Smallpiece, a marriage made in heaven.

The most wonderful wedding setting you can imagine. The house is just beautiful, filled with light and with amazing views across fields and distant hills. Each room is beautifully decorated and furnished and beds are super comfy. The Hill Place team are warm and welcoming and really helpful if you need them but they leave you to it if you don't! They couldn't have made us feel more welcome and their wedding gift of a drawing of Hill Place was really thoughtful. To sum up, we felt we were welcoming our wedding guests into a home and that's what made it unique and so very special.

A truly amazing weekend & wedding day. Everyone at hill place made us feel at home & treated us like family, not customers. A day we'll never forget. Stay in touch xx

It is such a friendly and inviting location, that you just need to visit it and enjoy the air it has. Suitable for a fair amount of people, those lovely interiors and compact exterior definitely call you inside. Should it be decorated for an event, well, that is just icing on the cake. I also would like to mention the welcoming management and once you visit it, don't forget to check out the garden.

Can't believe I have not put my review on this page yet! We had an amazing day, at this fabulous venue. So much support from Bex, Will and everyone. Hill Place made our wedding and is great to see it going from strength to strength it's no more than they deserve. Would recommend Hill Place to anyone.

Excellent venue for Calum and Sophie's wedding 12th July 2014 as the grooms parents from Scotland we stayed in the flat and were made very welcome by all at Hill Place. The addition of Smallpiece catering and six bearded fish wedding band made the wedding package complete for a perfect day.

We searched high and low for a wedding venue for our daughter when someone recommended Hill Place. We took the plunge, and could not have been happier with the choice. The house, garden and location speak for themselves ... For us they were Ideal. What only became clear when we got to know the couple and their wonderful staff was just how helpful they are. Rebecca, the land lady/manager really, really cares about the families who use it and goes the extra mile to make sure veryone gets what they need. She and husband Will work very well with the other contractors (eg marquees/caterers), which is an important factor. We could use their electricity, saving the need for an expensive and noisy generator. We asked to hire an extra room at short notice, and they declined to take payment even when we offered. Happy memories for the rest of our lives.

A place that felt like home when there for an Easter weekend celebrating Easter, 3 40th birthdays and just family being together! The host's although family made us feel so welcome and their home is wonderful! Great wedding venue or a place to escape or simply a place to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. We wish them every success. :)

Where to start! Hill Place is a gem of a find for all kinds of events from weddings to parties to any kind of gathering really.So. . . what makes this place different? Well, in our case we were looking for a wedding venue and hunted high and low for something special. What we really wanted was somewhere that we could feel at home while having a luxurious feel, somewhere that was personal and, well, not like a normal venue! 'By 'normal' venue I mean somewhere that has staff that don't care, that treat customers like dirt, that close at 11pm, that are just impersonal.Hill Place has a history, it is a magnificent family home of some scale, style and grace. The lovely owners inherited it a few years ago, fully furnished with really lovely pieces throughout and have basically lavished time and effort to create fully equipped house that retains all the charms of yesteryear, in the most beautiful countryside, and somewhere you can kick back, relax and soak up the atmosphere. Its a real home for real people - not swanky, just luxurious. If you want to be left alone. . . that's OK. If you want to have staff pamper you, that can be arranged. If you want to have some guests camp in the field next door that's fine too. If you want caterers in, they have the best on tap. If you want to cook for yourself and guests, the kitchen is well equipped. If you want to read, chill by a fire, whatever - the place is yours, just as if you owned it yourself. And THAT is the key to Hill Place, for a day, a weekend, or maybe a week you can play lord of the manor in the most delightful setting.Houses like this are more than rare and you will be lucky to find Hill Place available, but believe me, you will not be disappointed. We were lucky - we booked Hill Place for a whole weekend and had a wedding cum House Party. Every single one of our guests were just blown away by the place and we had the time of our lives. . . in all the hundreds of venues we have visited in the past, and over a long career of partying, Hill Place comes up top of the pile.

Went here last weekend for a fantastic wedding. I can't rate the facilities as we camped in the grounds but I did sleep well and there were showers in the house for the wedding guest overspill to use. One morning I woke early I crept into the drawing room and lay on the day bed to have a read. I looked out the window and saw the horses and sheep and beautiful countryside and decided i could get quite used to this sort of life! Staff were brilliant, food surroundings all great. The owners left us too it which for a magnificent stately home was very trusting, as we basically took over. At one point i think the owner of Hill Place came in for a dance. Its booked up for a year in advance so if you want to get married somewhere as amazing as this you are going to have to wait.

Went to a lovely wedding at Hill Place on 23rd Feb. Perfect for a small, intimate gathering for family and friends. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The whole venue could have been a little warmer on arrival, it was freezing outside and threatening snow showers yet no fires (log) were lit on arrival of guests. I noticed fires were lit whilst guests were having lunch but it was absolutely freezing for the actual ceremony. If it were not for this it would have been perfect.
Landed Houses
I visited Hill Place in January 2013. The house has a vast amount of downstairs entertaining place; numerous sitting rooms, a large dining room and open staircase around the hall. If that's insufficient there is a decent TV/entertainment room in the basement to keep the adults and children amused!Upstairs there are five comfortable bedrooms and more will follow shortly, once a self-contained flat is renovated. There are four bathrooms. The kitchen has an Aga, electric range cooker, large fridge and dishwasher. In summary the house has a lot of entertaining space (more than ample given the number of bedrooms) and is ideal for weddings, particularly small-ish indoor ones and outdoors using a marquee. The landlords are friendly and I much enjoyed my visit - the house comes recommended!Edmund

My husband and I were so lucky to have our wedding here on 4th August 2018. Hill Place paired with Small Piece was the dream combination. The venue was spotless and the gardens especially are so well kept. I can’t thank Hill Place enough for allowing us to have our wedding there. I was defiantly ... felt like a ‘disney’ princess in her magical castle. BEAUTIFUL!
