Felin Newydd is an elegant Georgian country house, to be found in a serene valley between Hay-on-Wye and the Brecon Beacons. It suits parties of family and friends, works for corporate use and offers selected dates for beautiful weddings.
The house has 9 large bedrooms, 4 of which can be converted to twins. The master bedroom has an Indian four poster, brought back in the times of the Raj. It has its own en-suite bathroom and French windows leading to a romantic balcony, on which to gaze at the moonlight. There are seven bathrooms in total, each allocated to a room, with two of the rooms sharing one bathroom.
Downstairs, there is a large kitchen with a table for breakfast, or a children’s early tea. The dining room leads from the kitchen, and seats 18. There is a chef available, should you wish to treat yourselves, and a concierge service, should you wish to organise anything. Beside the kitchen is the back hall, where the dogs can be kept, along with a cloakroom and gun room. The Treatment Room is beyond the back hall, and can be booked for different types of um…treatment.
There is a large drawing room, overlooking the lawns and rose garden, and with a baby grand piano, for Bertie Wooster-style recitals. There is a morning room for quiet endeavour and a billiards room for fierce house-hold competition. There is a library, for escaping.
To the west of the house, outside the dining room and kitchen, there is a large terraced area, with outdoor seating, a BBQ, and lots of herbs for cooks to pinch.
Felin Newydd was beautifully landscaped in the 19th Century, and the owners are restoring and renewing the gardens to their earlier glory. There’s plenty to wander around, including a formal circular pond and the wild woodland garden, and a sweet little orchard, which leads down to the River Triffrwd.
To the back of the house are the Edwardian stables and beyond those is the walled vegetable gardens, which are slowly being brought back into use. The vine house will be restored to house grapes and perhaps pineapples, and the garden walls repaired to support espaliered fruit trees. The admirable hope is to eventually supply the house with fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers, for much of the year.
Edmund’s Choice of Extraordinary Feature
“Felin Newydd makes a fabulous place to stay, but it’s the philosophy of the owners that make it really special. They’re determined to restore the estate to a modern, hard-working enterprise that sits naturally within its landscape, enriching its local area, as well as delighting its guests. The sort of place you want to keep going back to, to see what they’ve done next.”
About the Location
Felin Newydd House is about 15 minutes’ drive from Hay-On-Wye (a real treat, if you happen to be bookish). The Brecon Beacons are about 20 minutes’ away.
Things To Do
The house is superbly set up to entertain guests, and there’s lots to do, both on and off site. From the house, you can walk and cycle, or go foraging and fishing (the house’s ex-ghillie is an excellent guide). Just off the estate, you can go pony trekking, clay-pigeon shooting, golfing or Black Mountain-hiking. The staff can help you arrange things, or you can arrange them for yourselves.
Weddings and Special Celebrations
The house is licensed for civil ceremonies, and there are seven local churches that are welcoming and have a lovely vicar.
Felin Newydd House is renowned for its sporting hospitality, and is part of a respected and challenging shoot. Please contact the owner for further details.
