Cholwell Hall

£1,950 - £3,400

Full Weeks

£2,500 - £4,100

Cholwell Hall is an old rectory, just outside the city of Bath. The house is very relaxed, and welcomes family parties and well-behaved hen or stag groups.

There are 10 bedrooms (including one suite with living room and kitchen), with a mix of 3 double beds and 18 single (some of which are bunk beds). The house is usually booked for groups numbering between 15 to 24, but there are also fold-away beds, so the house can hold a maximum of 30 guests. There are six bathrooms, some of which lead off the bedrooms.

Downstairs, the rooms are spacious, with plenty of seating. There’s a dining room and an enormous lounge, which has a seating area and games room, separated by a double-fronted open fire. The games room has a pool table, football table and a karaoke machine.

There’s also a practical kitchen (with double butler’s sink), and a small seating area with a wood-burning stove.

Outside, there’s a terrace on which to glug jugs of Pimms, and barbecue locally-sourced sausages. There are beautiful views of the meadow to enjoy.

“Cholwell Hall is a very practical house, ideal for a gang of good friends to stay for a weekend. It’s within easy taxi distance from Bath or Bristol for a good Saturday night on the town, and the neighbours are mostly sheep.”

About the Location

Both Bristol and Bath are within 30 minutes’ drive of the house. The nearest train comes into Bath, and takes about 90 minutes from London.

There’s plenty to do nearby, including walking on the Mendip Hills, visiting the Wookey Hole caves, or Cheddar Gorge, or exploring the Chew Valley lakes. The owners of the house are very happy to assist in organising structured group activities.

  • Cholwell Hall worked really well as a "hen do" venue. The house is comfortable, warm, a bit quirky and the beds, bathrooms & kitchen are spotlessly clean. The kitchen was well equipped with lots of crockery & cutlery, and an immense wine/beer fridge! We managed to churn out home made pizzas for 20+ on Friday night and eat them round the kitchen table... and the dishwasher works! The lounge has comfy furniture and a karaoke machine (!), as well as a games area with table footie & pool table. The dining room has amazing formal furniture, set out in a square - worked well for competitive cup-cake decorating (!) & Saturday lunch which was "afternoon tea" style... Some of the bathrooms are dated (avocado!) but the showers work and the there is new wallpaper. The bathrooms, beds & bed-linen were fresh & clean - much appreciated after the dodgy night club facilities in Bath :-)

  • Cholwell Hall was ample for our party of 20 adults and 3 children. It's large enough for you not to feel you are on top of one another. The places they recommended for catering and eating out were all good. Ian made sure we had all the information we needed and very helpful when one if our party had to make a trip to urgent care centre! All was well I hasten to add

  • We had been looking forward to this Christmas party for months. However we were harassed over the weekend by the caretaker. This culminated on Sunday when we were in nearby Bath for a curry. We returned to find our possessions had been packed up and put outside. Leaving us to find hotels, friends floors to sleep on, or return home early. Some of us were over the limit to drive and therefore had to spend a fortune on taxis leaving and returning to collect cars the next day.

Worst of all a number of sentimental items were left inside the house, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he has not deliberately stolen them. He now refuses to respond our messages to collect them. Let alone grant a refund for the Sunday night that left all severely out of pocket.

  • Colwell Hall is a grand old building that is currently in a state of disrepair, which means that a weekend here feels more like being stuck inside a rundown nursing home, or hippie squat.

Much of the soft furnishing is in very poor condition, with many of the chairs in the living room stained or ripped to the point that it´s unpleasant to use them.

Besides the grubby furniture, we also experienced a recurring issue with the electrics, with one fuse regularly blowing. Unfortunately, the fuse box is locked away so each time this happens you´ll need to call the caretaker out to sort it. This is a bit of hassle.

The hall is sold as being suitable to host large parties but the small kitchen isn´t really set up for cooking for more than a handful at a time - the oven is just a standard sized affair and there are only four electric hobs. The owners had taken the decision to lock all of the windows, which means that it was impossible to get fresh air into any of the rooms. Not such a big deal in the bedrooms, but in the kitchen this was somewhat of a discomfort.

One of the few positives about the venue is that it´s very remote, and double glazed throughout, which means that there´s no issue with being as noisy as you want, so long as you´re inside the property.

If you´re a big group of lads looking for a place to drink, sing karaoke and eat takeaway food Cholwell Hall could be a good fit, but otherwise I´d recommend looking elsewhere.

  • I booked Cholwell Hall to celebrate my 40th birthday with some friends. Lucy was so helpful with information to hand to help with the planning. The house itself is huge, there were 22 of us and there was plenty of space for a group of that size. The beds were very comfy and the house was very clean. Its a brilliant place for a party due to the massive dining room and lounge and also a really big kitchen. We used top tier caterers who were fantastic and walked to the Mezze Pub down the road for dinner on the other night. For the space that you get and the privacy I think Cholwell Hall represents fantastic value for money. It could with a bit of updating here and there but then they would have to charge more, for us it was the perfect venue, thank you!

  • I had a large hen party of 25 to organise so we needed a big house and this is a mansion and the venue is ideal as its halfway between Bristol and Bath. The house has a large games room which we used as our party area (lots of room to dance!) and a big kitchen with all the equipment you need. There are eight bedrooms spread over two floors, it was lovely to have so much space. The only negative thing I would say is that the decor is very 70's and there are lots of wear and tear in the house if it could be updated or fixed I would have definitely given it 5 stars. I would recommend this house for large parties as the setting is beautiful and there are no neighbours so don't need yo worry about noise levels!!!!

  • We have just had an amazing weekend at cholwell hall! Large house with spacious rooms plenty of room for everyone. Very clean. Had a party sat eve with a karaoke machine provided. Lovely large dinning room with huge table , was great for family Sunday roast. Would defiantly stay here again. Only downside was that the Windows don't open!! Could have done with at least the kitchen window to open as got very hot when cooking. Brilliant time had by all.

  • Had to plan a stag weekend in May and stayed at Cholwell Hall. It was a fantastic place to stay in. We were 18 guys there and there was plenty of room for our group. Everyone was very helpful during the booking process which was mostly done via email, their response to my emails were quick as well. They also emailed me lists of things to do in the area, taxi's, fancy dress places and many more things I found relevant to our weekend. Transport was something I had luckily organised before hand but just make sure that you have it sorted as it can be hard trying to book last minute cabs for such a large group. There was however a bus from nearby that ran into Bristol which we took once but takes a while with all the stops.
The facilities were great, from a large dining room that fit us all comfortably with space for more to a games room attached to a living room which was also large enough for us. The kitchen was large enough for the majority of our group to chill out in in the morning and talk about what happened during our night before in town. They have all the things you would need in a kitchen with plenty of spares. Enough fridges for all the drinks we had as well. We had a barbeque on the saturday and everything was there that we needed with a great view of the countryside. Unfortunately we had an incident from one of the guys in our group which ended up with some damage to the house. I explained the situation before we left and they were very understanding about the situation. Obviously this ended up in us losing some of the deposit but no more then thought necessary. I would have hoped for nothing to go wrong but with 18 guys in a stag you can only hope.

All in all the experience was great, from the group I was told that the house made the weekend. A great place for us to all hang out before and after our trips into Bristol and having really great time feeling right at home.

  • 15 of us stayed at Cholwell Hall for the weekend, the only problem was we couldn't stay longer!
There were plenty of space and everything was clean and tidy.
Obviously it was an old house so it had the odd creak, cobweb and the lounge furniture was a tad tired, but it didn't ruin what was a great weekend.
The housekeeper was lovely, and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed.
All dealing we had with admin have been positive.
If we had stayed in warmer weather the lack of pool would have been issue, but it was too cold at the end of September.
The party room with Karaoke machine was made use of, luckily no neighbours to hear us!

  • We spent many months earlier in the year trying to find suitable accommodation for 29 members of my family to go away in the October half term. We were celebrating our brothers 50th birthdays.

The family range was oldest 93 years old (our dad) and youngest member was my nephew aged 5. We needed space for dining and room for entertainment, together with in-house activities should the weather stop us from being outside.

    Cholwell Hall ticked all boxes.

The house although dated was clean, comfortable and had a homely feeling. The house was on 3 floors and most of the bedrooms were of good size and some of the bedrooms were en-suite. There was enough room to add extra fold away beds on the lower floor which we needed.

In the main lounge area, there was a pool table and football game, together with karaoke machine which we all enjoyed.

The best time for us was when we could be together and have our meals in the very large dining room.

We were surprised the kitchen was not in keeping with the rest of the house, in terms of size. It has a large table and many chairs to sit round. The downside was the size of the oven and cooker. These were standard size and would not really suit large parties if you were totally self catering. We took food which we had already cooked and only needed re-heating, although there was plenty of crockery, glassware and cutlery to accommodate our large party.

Overall the house suited our purpose and I would recommend staying there.Show less
