North Cadbury Court

North Cadbury Court is an Elizabethan Grade I classified house in Somerset, just beside Cadbury hill, on which it’s thought Camelot once stood.

The house has been renovated to an extraordinary standard, and is ideal for weddings, special family parties or celebrations, or for corporate use.

In the main house there are 21 bedrooms and 19 bathrooms that can sleep up to 41 adults (bunks and extra beds are available for children). There is a lift which can reach both the first and second floors. The beds are all unique to the house and range from an old campaign bed to the most fabulous Elizabethan four-poster.

If you need more accommodation, a self-contained flat to sleep 7 is also available to hire in the East Wing and the Yacht Club has a double bedroom. There are also 4 beautiful B & B cottages in an adjacent Coach House which can sleep a total of 30 guests, taking the number that can sleep at the estate to 80.

A further four bedrooms in the newly-opened East Wing can sleep 7 more guests.

Downstairs, the reception rooms are large but not at all anonymous or hotel-like; they include a games room with snooker table, a morning room, drawing room (with card-tables) and two kitchens: one a family kitchen, warmed by an Aga, and one a fully-fitted catering kitchen, complete with pot-wash.

The two largest rooms are the North Hall (often used for dining), and the Ballroom, which has a mellow-toned Beckstein piano in one corner, and which can seat 160 people for a banquet.

Below ground, the two vaulted wine cellars have been converted to a casino and a disco, in which guests can rattle chips with insouciance, or dance until dawn. Radio 1 DJs have even been known to entertain crowds in the cellar!

The grounds of the house continue to be extraordinary, with an indoor swimming pool, 10-seater jacuzzi, gym, sauna and two treatment rooms. There is also a cosy BBQ terrace just off the kitchens, and a walled garden just off the swimming pool.

The roof of the house is the perfect place for cocktails, and from there, guests can see the golf course, lakes, shooting gallery, tennis courts (three of them), archery range and croquet lawn. Oh, and a thousand bucolic acres, farmed by the owners of the house, the Montgomerys.

“Choosing an extraordinary feature in a truly extraordinary house is incredibly difficult. North Cadbury Court really is unlike any other house; despite its grandeur and history, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and just seems to want its occupants to have fun.

In a house where I could pedalo on the lake, or dance in the ballroom, I think my favourite thing has to be the first tee, for the three-hole golf course. It’s built on the roof terrace, and the ball soars over the front pediment to land somewhere beside the lake. There’s something endearingly bonkers about this house, and I love it.”

About The Location

North Cadbury Court is 1 hour 40 mins by train from London and around 2 hours by car (just off the A303). There are local pubs (with lots of cider), a lovely deli with restaurant and a village shop, all within walking distance.

Things To Do

Almost any activity you could imagine can be arranged from North Cadbury Court. Available on-site and included in the house rental, you have a 3-hole golf course with the first tee from the roof, archery, croquet, pedaloes, paddleboarding and canoeing, country walks and fishing (on one of two lakes).

The nearest towns are Bruton, Wincanton and Yeovil.

Weddings

NNorth Cadbury Court is fantastic for weddings and holds licenses for the North Hall and the Ball Room. The Ballroom can seat up to 160. In addition, there are two outdoor licensed areas for ceremonies.

Couples can also marry at the nearby St. Michael’s Church (patron saint of Warriors), to which there is a private entrance from the house.

When holding a wedding at North Cadbury Court there will be an event manager to help plan the stay, on the wedding day they will be there to make sure everything runs smoothly. There is no corkage charge and no hidden extras.

House History

The house is mainly Elizabethan, although some parts of it are medieval and dated as early as 1300. A beautiful Georgian facade was added to the house on its south side in the late 1700s.
